Oil Suggestions For My Cub

Featured Replies

Hello .

Could someone suggest what oil to use for the engine and gearbox on my cub,

Thanks

Old Bones,

As no one else has replied, I'll kick off:

I use Castrol GTX 10/40 (semi synthetic I think) in my engine (top tube tank + spin on filter) and gear box.

I change both about every 3rd trial/practice session.

I use good quality ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) in my clutch (about 100cc to lube the primary chain).

I expect to be corrected at any moment but this seems to work fine for me.

I think it's more important to change the oil frequently than splash out on exotic stuff!

Hope this helps,

Bruce.

Many thanks Brucey and Old trials fanatic,

I was not sure of what I put in to start with so thought to seek advice first.

I have plenty of 20/50 castrol and also plenty of straight 30 & 40 and have never considered the semi synthetic option although I do use ATF in the chaincase.

Looks like a trip to the shops and see what they have.

In case someone has found the same problem as me when I came to drain the gearbox I found that because the engine is spacered over I could not get a spanner on the drain plug so I syphoned it out from the filler cap using thin plastic pipe and a hand held syphone .

Thanks again

Old Bones

cub engines were built in a time when there was no such thing as semi synthetic so a trip to the local discount store ought to score some mineral oil 5/30 or 10/40 would be okay as its changed so regularly after so little running, your engine will not know the difference.

what is important is to make sure that the engine is properly flushed to remove depoists/ crud etc imternally otherwise loverly clean oil is wasted. a nice magnetic sump plug helps as there will always be something to pull out.

Totalshell,

Thanks for the advice and the magnetic sump plug mod.
