Hi, just purchased a 1975 ty80 as a christmas present for my girlfriends boy and also as a little project for me!!!

The bike runs well but there are a few issues and needs some advice

1. the kick start has started to move on the splines of the kick start shaft. It just about grips but can only see it getting worse. How much work is it to change the kick start shaft on the bike? Ive never 'got' into an engine before so complete newby to this. Is it an easy job of just dropping the oil, laying the bike down, taking the case off and replacing the shaft and seals. Or will i have to remove the engine from the bike and completly dismantle the engine? Another option i thought was to liquid weld the kick start on for now and then look at it after xmas when i have more time.

2. The rubber hose between the carb and airbox to me seems to be about an inch too short and just, well barely, catches on the carb and airbox. Is this a common problem or can you by a longer hose, or will i just have to modify it. In my opinion i would like to see it sitting about 20mm over both the carb and airbox.

Any help would be greatly appretiated.

The kick start shaft is pretty easy to remove once you've removed the cover, just unhook the spring and it should pull out.

Most go this way, my old one from 35 year ago went like this, the lever it's self wore away the splines as well, so it may need a new one.

As for the Carb/manifold/airbox, has it got all the correct parts?

there should be a spacer ring (35) on the airbox end of the carb.

You might need to make something up to bridge the gap.

john cane as mentioned above is your man heled me out no end with unobtanium..

You may need a impact screwdriver for the cover screws , ( old and possibly buggerd up ...) Get some allenhead replacements ,(easily sourced and cheap at twice the price !) And make sure you have a manual first !!!! One of the easiest motors to work on , don't be afraid of it , just think things through ... And are you aware that the right footpeg folds up out of the way of the kicker ? and should stay up till you push it back down . makes starting them much easier !

The rubber inlet boot has shrunk with age. Just by a new one. Ty 80 gas caps also shrink.

I am at the minute rebuilding a TY80, its my first rebuild and I have made quite a few mistakes such as snapping the detent plunger.

I am having real trouble finding a new one, does anyone know where might be a good place to look?

Have you read the post above #2, regarding John Cane he is the man for old yamaha parts and a great guy.

I have and have already bought quite a few bits from his website without realising it was the same person. I have now emailed him asking so hopefully I'll hear from him soon.

I just bought a new unifilter foam air filter for my TY80 and was wondering if there is a specific type or thickness of oil to soak it in before it goes in that will work better than others.

Any information greatly appreciated.

light weight oil, and don't "soak", pour a little oil on and massage well in until covered but not over oiled. Use a ziploc bag if you don't want to get your hands oily
