December 14, 201411 yr Hi Just swapping forks over on my198a Picked up a cracking pair at kempton park a few months ago.... I didn't notice the difference untill I went to pop the wheel back in.... Now I'm definately no expert but I think the original fork on the bike are the proper ones for the 198a..with a split sleeve in the lhs leg and a big rebate in the rhs for the nut..(spindle is slotted on the lhs) The good newer set I was told would pop straight in which they do? Problems are Lhs split sleeve is a different diameter about 1.5-2 mm larger so my spindle flaps around like a p###k in a shirt sleeve? And the rhs fork leg doesn't have the rebate.... What I'm asking is there an easy (ish) solution to this or do I have to re machine a new split sleeve to the correct size.......and then machine out the rhs to accommodate the nut..the fork legs do appear to be identicle so they seem to be able to take the modification .I'm cool with having to do this but its just a drag...?...I have access to a lathe and a mill so its all doable.. December 14, 201411 yr Hello, All my Sherpa Ts, have the split sleeve lhs & counter bore rhs in the sliders. (92& 199). Sounds like you may have Alpina sliders & Sherpa stanchions (re knurl) @ lower clamp position. That said, the axel is probably loose in rhs also. You have access to lathe & mill as do I so a little time is involved. Maybe Sherpa lhs split sleeve will fit, now only rhs to deal with. Only my thoughts good luck. Larry
December 14, 201411 yr Author Hi yeah rhs is sloppy to not quite as much so,that needs abit of a sleeve to.... Swapping stanchions and Bottoms could be an option but the newer ones are ten times better nick
December 14, 201411 yr They changed the fork legs for a different spindle fitting in '72 with the model 91/92 From the model 91 the spindle nut is recessed (like the 198a) along with the new style conical front hub Prior to that, the spindle nut located on the outside of the fork leg and the front wheel was the older style, not the conical type You should be able to modify them ok, from memory. You have to be careful with Bultaco forks, much of the components look the same but there are subtle differences. The forks on 250 models from the 158 to the 190 are shorter than the 350 forks from the same years because of the different frame. The bottom yoke is also not as deep. They reverted to normal length from the 198. Edited December 14, 201411 yr by woody
