4T Hot Start Kit

Featured Replies

Hi..... ref the title everyone seems to know the problem with my bike and hot starting and some non judgemental advice has been offered and I thought I had it sorted but on Sunday last it did behave in  a fickle way with for no reason, sometimes starting first kick sometimes taking 3/4 mins to start!

does anyone know if the hot start kit works????? If so what difference does it make.

I really love the bike when riding but the starting is an issue.

Any help(constuctive ) out there?????

thanks Pete.

I have a similar problem with my 2008 4T. When it gets hot it just refuses to start, when cold starts easy and a good bike to ride, but when it gets hot its a *$%^ :wall: .

Where do I start looking?

Currently I am trying to get a 2008 bike to start when hot, and am making some progress, what idle jet do you have fitted?

Also as a clue when cold will your bike start without the choke?

Hi...not ron ,starts fine when cold no choke ,no throttle and after a couple of prods away she goes. Friend of mine on Sunday suggested lowering the needle one place to weaken as may be running too rich, haven't looked yet but will @ week-end.Also going to try removing plug cap leaving plug in and fitting cap to another plug outside to see if good spark under compression.

I'm intrigued. How are you going to find if there's a good spark under compression if the lead is not connected to the plug under compression?

What you could use is the Gunson Colourtune mentioned on here the other day.

Vanman, the 4T I have been working on would start cold without choke and then would not start hot, the original idle jet was a 45, with a 35 it starts when hot but runs  a bit lean, probably a 37 or 38 jet would be best.

What idle jet do you have?

Didn't the early '05s suffer from something similar like fuel vaporising  in the inlet tract when the engine got hot with the results you are describing. And didn't Sherco introduce a mod for that, maybe a heat shield and a carb alteration?

This is also my thoughts when the bike would start cold without the choke, points towards pilot jet being too big & a smaller jet is cheap to try

Vanman, what year is yours? The ideal fix is to update to the fully sorted update carb first offered on the '08 10th anniversary model and '09's. Its a modded PWK 28 called the Sherco SPS carb, a regular pwk can be converted with parts from Chris or Ryan, etc if your VERY handy in the shop. Dont mess with other carbs unless you want to waste your time and money and still not fully sort it. Your 3.2's can be amazing too

2stroke4stroke.....the idea was to see if the cdi unit was breaking down? Mind you i'm no mechanic as you may have guessed!

Vanman,Okay your '09 will have the sps carb, nice, make sure your valve clearance's are not too tight. Your pilot should be a 42 or 45 and your main should be a 128. Your mixture screw should be out 1/2 turn and dont set your tick over too low, you should have to start with choke when cold. Dont give any throttle to start, hot or cold...only giver throttle open after you take a very nasty spill and roll around off hill and flood it badly. Oh..and dont stab at kick start lever...give it a good solid boot:-)  Hope this helps you out.

Paul....as I'm not a mechanic I had the valves checked by one and they are fine,as you say I do not give throttle hot or cold however on Sunday out of frustration I did try full throttle and kicked her over then kicked again with no throttle and away she went!!! However this was a one off. I will check the jets at week-end.

Many thanks for your input.

  • 2 months later...

i put a 24 mm oko on mine started first kick after that

when cold it should need the choke if it starts when cold without your pilot jet is a bit to big

i had a 40 in mine and a 110 main ( in the 24 mm oko)

i think gas speed is to slow at tickover in the big carb

kind regards bob
