I know there was some "discussion" about the aluminium head steady found on some later model 199Bs. Has anyone found any retailer selling these later types?

Nope, there very simple to make as are flat plate aluminium.

Do you have the bracket on the top tube?

you will also need a bracket fabricated on the head connection too

 

Yep, I have the bracket on top tube just needs drilling. I have the plate aluminium just need time to make it......

Someone was selling these at the Stafford Classic Bike show in April, I will try to get further details for you.

If they're made be surprised if in motion don't have them.

The head bracket is v important to be strong enough

The original factory alloy head steady and the later pattern versions are notorious for breaking, even from brand new.

I bought a head steady from the chap who was at the Stafford show back in April and its a super set up, way better than the factory item. He was on the Old Codgers MCC stand in the Off-Road Hall, if you want to send me a P.M I'll send on his contact details.

These brackets were on display and sale at both Telford and Stafford.

Think you're mixing up here, original was steel later than 3000 frame nos some had a one piece alot drilled plate fixed to head bolts by a steel bracket. They are very good and strong and never heard of one of these breaking

That's interesting, as I was referring the original factory item on the 199,199a and 199B which came into Ireland and I had the complete opposite experience with them.

Back in the day when I rode an early 199 (1978, red, fibreglass tank model) I repaired and replaced the head steady at least 3 or 4 times. When I worked behind the spares counter of the Irish Bultaco importers (Lindsay Motorcycles) they were a constant seller and when we ordered them as spares from the factory, we only ever received alloy one's.

When I recently bought the lazer cut headsteady kit for my new 199A restoration project I bought it as a result of my poor experiences with the original factory head-steadies.

As l said you're mixing up.

199b late head steady is a triangular Alloy plate fixed in to a steel bracket on head and two points on top tube not one. All previous are pressed steel and yes constantly break

These brackets replicate the original alloy type fitted to the last bikes produced having a two point mounting to the frame tube and are not the forked steel type.
