Sy250 2004 gear lever problem

I’ve just rebuilt a sy250 engine and noticed the gear lever had a bit of play when clutch casing was fitted,I removed casing and it looks like the end of gear lever that fits onto the selector drum isn’t catching the selector properly,it’s moving up and down a fair bit,has anyone else encountered this?the gear lever is seated against the casing when pushed into position.
