  1. Yeah, it's just you. You probably throw soured milk away and follow all of those expiration dates on food too. Some folks are perfectly content with what ever muffler "The Man" has installed on their motorcycle. I, Sir, am not one of those people.
  2. I'll keep and eye out for a new one or nice used one. It wound be nice to have an easy to repack silencer can on the end though. I got the bike from a STRA member in Macon, GA. He might even be a member here.
  3. I found a thread here where another member document his cutting, repacking and closing back up of a Beta muffler/silencer. He was nice enough to send me a slide show of how he did it all. A perforated steel core runs thru the center of the aluminum muffler body which is lined and filled with sound absorbing material. Basically the whole muffler is a glass pack muffler which also serves as an expansion chamber I'd assume. Might anyone know if the Sherco uses the same design? I'm kinda inclined to gut the whole muffler body and then add on my KX silencer which is repackable. The larger volume of expansion chamber might be great for power. I wonder if oil accumulation is a reason they get noisy? Ponderous.
  4. This is the exact look I am going for! Awesome! I guess that price isn't too bad. How long do new ones usually stay quiet-er? Might you know of a thread or link that would have pictures of one of these mufflers opened up? Two chambers etc. or have you seen inside and might explain how it is laid out?
  5. I'll have to make a bracket/guard combo to keep my new silencer in place. Where did you find a newer style rear muffler? The ones I find are pretty expensive and overseas so shipping on top of the cost. I know, wahhhh.
  6. I just picked up a FMF silencer for a '94 KX 125 I hope to mod and stick on the end of my OE Sherco silencer/muffler. (Sorry, couldn't link or post just the picture) http://www.ebay.com/itm/190658277839?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 I thought I'd have to have the FMF tubing expanded a bit to fit over the 1.25" OD Sherco tip but the FMF tubing is about 1" OD and I think it will slip inside the Sherco tip, once I cut it square. I think I read that the rear muffler/chamber/silencer on my '01 125 is the same part number as the 250 and 290. This makes me think the tuning for Trials power is not as critical as MX or high revving engines. I bring this up because the OD of the silencer piping for the KX125 is the same size as the ID of the tip coming out of my 125 muffler. I'm sure a KX125 makes more horsepower than my Sherco 125 and I think that the size was a compromise to cover 125/250/290. I think the slightly smaller diameter and longer length just may help bottom end as well as taking some of the bark off of the note.
  7. Gotcha. Mine has one hose running from one side to the other. I thought this was odd and wouldn't work but there is a slice cut in the hose at it's lowest point, under the carb.
  8. I think I have the same issue as the OP, it's not that the throttle is sticking or hard to pull, it is too light and too easy to pull. Makes trying to ride it more difficult to control. Maybe Dellorto has higher rate springs for these carbs.
  9. What exactly are deflector tubes? Are they like filters?
  10. I wouldn't mess with the idle mixture air screw yet, it ran before the way it was set, right? Sounds like you have a clogged jet or something else, you need to look in the float bowl.
  11. Too late for that! I suppose the silencer assembly is also the expansion chamber too so it is prolly tuned for the engine as well as making it a bit quieter. Mine is a bit dented on the outside face so maybe it's time for a mod.
  12. So there is a combination of steel wool packing and softer fabric like packing? Would it be better to just use stainless steel wool packing for all of it? I've also read that just burning out all of the oil and opening up the perforated cores really helps too. What about any kind of add on or different muffler that will fit in the same location?
  13. What in tarnation is a deflector tube? I'll definitely get an inline fuel filter. I did notice that the emulsion tube sticks up into the throat of the carburetor more than I've seen in any other brand, Mikuni, Keihin etc. Works well, very light throttle spring, not what I'm used to, very touchy. I just got two gallons of 93 octane pure gas, no alcohol. I hope this helps, 'bout time I quit.
  14. The carb turned out to be pretty clean, however one of the float rods was bent slightly and the left side float didn't move up and down easily. I bent it back a little bit so it would slide. Bike starts and runs like it did. Is the tank supposed to fit so tightly and has to be pushed down when tightening the screws? They sure did put alotta stuff in a small space.
  15. Mine started doing this while riding, started to wheeze like it was running out of gas and then died. Wouldn't start unless choke was on nor would it keep running even if I gave it throttle. It did this warm, after riding for about 20 minutes. I suppose some gunk coulda gotten loose and clogged the jets, can't think of anything else that would cause this problem.

    Octane

Ok, that makes sense. Compression ratio pretty much dictates octane regardless of how much you keep the engine wound up, it can ping even at low rpm with too low octane. A hot plug would/could cause issues if the bike was ridden wide open for extended periods of time like an MX bike. I've run hotter plugs in MX bikes when luggin' thru the woods so they were less likely to foul and leave me stranded. Had to be careful about holding it wide open for long periods though. Since Trials bikes aren't held wide open rippin' thru the gears very often the high octane/hot plug combo makes sense.

    Octane

I am the proud new owner of a 2001 Sherco 125. The previous owner kept the bike in great shape and informed me of a few things to do to keep it that way. I understand and agree with all except for the suggestion to run premium 93 octane or better. This isn't a money thing rather it conflicts with my experience over the many years I've had with internal combustion things. For starters, the spark plug. Sherco recommends an NGK with a "5" heat range. This is a pretty hot plug, NGK plugs are hotter the lower the number. Compared to the fleet of modern 4 stroke hyper sportbikes with agressive everything, compression, ignition timing, cam timing etc. which run a "9" or "10". Most 2 stroke motorcross bikes use a "7", "8" or "9". Lawn equipment use a "4" or "5".....my point being you can tell alot by what plug the manufacturer specifies. A "5" heat range plug and "high octane" sorta contradict each other. Has anyone tried regular American pump gas, the 87 octane variety? I have experienced wonderful results in my more mildly tuned engines like easier starting, higher idle and crisper throttle response. I have not experienced knock/ping/detonation and would imagine the engine would be cleaner running lower octane as it burns more easily and completely.
  18. I may go look at a 2001 and 2003 Gas Gas 280. What should I look for or be weary of? Both were purchased new and just ridden for fun, not competitively. I know this isn't always a good thing but they look to be clean and in good shape. I'll try searching on the rest of the forum too or please list a link. Thanks!
  19. Thanks for the warm welcome. I work weekends unfortunately so making events would have to be planned in advance. This does however leave my week days free and that usually means less traffic regardless of what I'm doing.
  20. I grew up in Central Florida and have ridden MX bikes alot for woods riding, I'd put my skills at slightly better than average as are my street bike skills. My brain just doesn't seem to like to go as fast as it used to, not to mention this area of the country doesn't really let you use lotsa horsepower, on or off road. I have no desire to compete rather just ride in the woods behind my house. I live on a ridge with trails and old wagon roads but none of it is flat or open. An MX bike would be work just to control the power. Thanks for all of the info, look forward to more.
  21. I've been riding motorcycles for a few decades now but I don't think I've ever ridden a Trials bike. I have been amazed by the things they can do and now I live in a place with lots more vertical and rocky off road scenery, I believe a Trials bike would be perfect! Before I purchase one I would like to get some recommendations. I'm much more familiar with the Big 4 Japanese marques and street bikes in general. Gas Gas, Beta, Montesa, Sherco.....very unfamiliar to me. What is reliable and easy to get parts for in the US? I'd like to get a nice used bike first. Where would one look for a Trials bike, there weren't too many on eBay or my local Craigslist. I look forward to this new adventure.
