  1. Thanks mate. My only point of reference for the right sound is You Tube recordings of TYs in action, and they all kind of sound like mine. The SM silencer is really neat and I'm sure is 'quiet'. Perhaps the issue

is the central box. Look forward to any other opinions out there. Cheers.

(Sorry about the bike upside down shot. Got nothing to do with being down under, it's just how it turns out! Doght!)

  2. G'day,

Just got my restored TY running. It has a new Sammy Miller's alloy silencer, but it's running too loud for my liking. They advised that repacking (more packing) could be detrimental to performance. They make 'em so I guess they're right,

but I imagine there's always another view.

Anyone have any thoughts on this, or advice on how to quieten the exhaust overall. I burnt out all the carbon/crud from the pipe/middle section before

re-installing, so that part of the equation should be fine.

Is it worth getting the middle sectioin opened up and packed, or does this harm

performance, too? Just thinking about all the options. Even considered that exhaust wrapping tape, but think it could do more harm than good.

I appreciate that TY's do make a 2-stroke racket, but I ride in buit up areas where some quite stealth is kind of needed.

Any feedback on the matter would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Cheers,

    bird

  3. Thanks for the tips guys. I searched the wider web for info and seems you can fit a tubeless tyre with a tube on a tubeless rim. But can't fit a tubeless tyre with a tube (or not) on a non-tubeless rim. ??!!??

I think the spokes and rim shape have a lot do with it; not creating an air tight seal, or something like that. Cheers.

  4. Thanks David, I'll have to have a sniff around. Imagine the Michelins will cost more than the IRCs. There's a joint on ebay offering Pirelli here in Bris, but I think they're more trials block style for trail bikes rather than true trials tyres.

Eddie. No idea about a price, but if you search ebay UK they pop up there sometimes.

Also, there is no rear disk brake on the air cooled monos, though the later Z model with water cooled motor had disks front and rear.

    Cheers guys.

  5. Thanks guys.

Ah, um, eer, the tyres went to the dump after I had to hacksaw them off they were so rock hard!

So sorry, can't tell you exactly.

Trial Competition rings a bell, and they had tubes, but I don't know the exact model description.

Whatever was around in 1991 I guess.

See you're in Gladstone, feetupfun. Who's good for tyres in Qld/ Brissy? Cheers.

  6. After some advise on new tyres, please.

My bike had the original Michelins, but they're stuffed.

    Should I stick with Michelin?

Any other brands worth considering (Pirelli, Dunlop, IRC...) or to be avoided?

The bike is not for competition, purely recreational, but I still want it to ride right.

    Appreciate any words of wisdom.

    Thanks.

  7. Agree, one over-engineered brake there. And a lot of braking power for a trials bike going super slow most places. My Pinky has a disk up front and I wonder whether the factory went more for fashion over function at the time. Means I don't have Z spokes up front, so that a plus!

  8. 250R Pinky tank is plastic. No new ones around. Most old tanks like mine have the petrol staining and cannot be painted (to last). Steel tanks can at least be prettied up with a coat of paint. But being steel they ding a lot easier. All depends what you need I guess. Good luck with your search

  9. Hey, mine was pretty bad inside too, though no huge pieces fell out, But boy it is loud so suspect there is no baffling (that wadding stuff) inside. Read somewhere that they can be cut open, carefully, from the side facing into the frame and can be repacked with the baffling stuff or repaired, if you no longer has any 'guts' inside, and then re-welded closed again. I haven't done the cutting open thing yet as I have a new silencer which I hope will solve the noise issue once my bike is back on the road. Maybe ask a local exhaust making place if there's one nearby.

If you're chasing a silencer I got mine from Sammy Miller Products in the UK and it is a beautiful thing. Good luck.

  10. searay175: got some of that white satin VHT dye/paint and applied it over the weekend. Tank now looks great. Time will tell how long it will last once filled with fuel. Fingers crossed. If it all ends in tears it was at least worth a shot. Thanks again for the tip, and other guys for your opinions. Cheers.

  11. Thanks for that tip. A pastic dye? Haven't heard that one in all my net searching for a solution. We have VHT here in Australia so I'll have a look around.

Also, thanks to the other guy with the shedworks link. I dropped them a line and haven't heard anything back yet.

The only crazy idea I'm considering is using a rattle can paint that has zinc in the mix, as used for keeping metal stuff from corroding. I thought

that the zinc, being a 'metal', might create a petrol resistant finish. Dunno. Could be a totally dumb idea, but you've got to keep thinking I guess!

Cheers guys, I'm off to Google plastic dye...

  12. Thanks crowley. I've tried every polishing trick I know, even learnt the hard way about the heat on the fenders. The staining on the these plastic tanks seems to be in the very pores of the plastic and cannot be polished out or extracted. There's lots of stuff on the web but no one seems to have cracked a fool proof solution. If I could by a new tank I'd be cool. cheers

  13. Thanks mate. I probably should have clarified that what I've seen available is a one piece cowl, if you like, that sits over the plastic tank so it's retained underneath, so no fuel goes near it. It's purely for looks. The seat section just clips in where main seat piece went. Again, thanks for your feedback. Cheers.

  14. Anyone fitted one of those after market one piece fibreglass tank covers come seat for TY Monos?

Curious about the quality, fit, durability etc.

    Any feedback appreciated.

I have a Pinky with ugly stained plastic tank, hence the idea of improving the look as the tank

cannot be cleaned up (so I'm told).

    Thanks guys.

  15. G'day, hope you guys can help. Have installed new races in the frame top and bottom that came with the new roller bearings. I matched the stamped numbers and brand so all should be sweet. But: the top race sits a nats just below flush with the frame, so the bearing sits a tad high, which I assume is the way things should be so the top section has something to turn on. Is this right? The race will not go in any further. The botttom race is in snug as, but more recessed, with space for what I assume is to accomodate the black rubber dust seal that comes as part of and at the base of the bearing. Again, does this sound right? I question it because the seal doesn't slip into space readily and I wondered whether it might have to be spread out instead. Sorry this is a bit long winded but I don't have any photos nor can I find any reference anywhere. Hope someone on the forum has some answers. Many thanks. AB Brisbane.

  16. Just raising this old subject if I could. Can one of you guys or anyone else explain more about the TY mono exhaust system? Front section first: does this have some sort of packing inside to keep it quiet, and does it deteriorate over time? And if it's no good inside, can I cut it open, replace the packing and reweld closed again? The back alloy section: does

it also have a packing that goes off and needs replacing?

My bike has a loud bark to it and I imagine that it should run quieter, which I'd like to do, without forking out a fortune for new aftermarket exhausts. Many thanks.
