    Engine Cover Seal

Thanks Copemech. I am in Scotland in the Uk, so slightly out of your way! Our weather is the exact opposite to Texas. Tends to be on the damp side, more so this year than ever!! Splat shop it is. A new one will tidy the look of the bike up a bit as well. Thanks for your help.

    Engine Cover Seal

All good advice guys, thanks.... the O ring seal won't seat properly as the groove it should sit in is chewed. Would you guys recommend replacing the cover for the new one without the spocket guard and combining that with some of the ideas here? Do the later ones fit an '05?
  3. So, having just replaced the stator, I want to ensure a good seal on the plastic casing on my 290. I don't want any water getting in. The casing doesn't fit that well and the new giant O ring I fitted managed to work loose and got fried by the stator. Sure that I read on here somewhere that they don't seal well anyway, so my question is, what does everyone else do to get a watertight fit? The one I have has the sprocket cover on it. Any thoughts guys?
  4. Thanks all.... will just keep with regular oil changes and see what happens. Clutch works fine now after an oil change. Suspect it was because previous owner had left it for a year untouched. I'll run it for a few hours then give it another change. Thanks for the advice.......
  5. Hmmm...... my sherco 290 (05) had really awful dark grey oil when I bought it, so gave it an oil change. Ran it for an hour or two then got clutch creep. Then the clutch packed in. Changed the oil (still very dark grey) as clutch plates had stuck. Hey presto clutch now fine. After a further 2-3 hours, decided on oil change as an extra flush, but still very dark grey - almost black. Do I persist with the oil changes until the oil remains clear(ish) or do I need to flush out (with what) or have I got a problem? Coolant level is fine, so no evidence of water getting in. RSVP...
  6. It was the stator. Now fixed and running
  7. I have checked all the earth connections and gave them a quick sand to roughen up the contacts (although they looked fine anyway). Also, I checked all electrical connections and all were pressed firmly home, so at a loss. I think mine is serious. I have also isolated the kill switch and still no joy. The dealer I bought it from has asked me to take it to a local dealer who can hopefully diagnose it. To isolate the kill switch I removed the tank to get the wiring and took the switch out the loop from the coil and joined everything up. When u see it you'll figure it out - I think. If anyone else has any other ideas I'd be grateful. Meantime, it's local dealer time for me.
  8. Thanks Copemech. I'll try to find a spark in the garage (lights off). Have already isolated the kill switch but without success. I have cleaned the carb, jets, breathers, filters etc... twice now. Fed copper wire through also. Main jet does however seem to have a rough edge just visible with the naked eye even after passing wire thro' so I may replace that for good measure. If I cant get a spark is it likely to be the stator in your opinion? Also, when I gave the bike an oil change - 300ml of chocolate coloured oil came out. Why that colour, and where did the other 150ml go? Hmm... water pump seal perchance? Any ideas?
  9. This isn't the answer I was looking for...... sigh. Thanks guys. "Sweet machine" and "ready to go" said the dealer. I was expecting more than 20 mins of riding based on that comment.... Cheers anyway.
  10. Groan. Bought a 2005 290 from a dealer on line. "serviced and good to go". It wasn't and isn't. Rode it for 20 mins and all good, then it started fluffing a bit, then wouldn't idle, then it would rev out until I could kill it. Left it overnight. Same next day but would only run on choke before it revved out. Did the basics. Changed fuel, cleaned carb, fuel filter, changed transmission oil (which was brown), cleaned airfilter and lubed, cleaned airbox. Started OK, but plug (a new one) very oilly so played around with mixture screw (2 half turns out, rather than the original 5) and it felt better but still occassionally fluffing. Original dealer (who is 250miles away) advised me too clean carb again, which I have done but now I have no spark and it just won't start. Any thoughts.

    Thanks Geodet. Even simpler!

    Fuel Mix Sherco

Thanks Tony27. I thought I was being daft. 65ml sounds 'safer as well as easier'. Cheers for reassuring.

    Fuel Mix Sherco

Just bough a Sherco 290. Dealer from Wales recommends 80:1 mix. By my maths and that of a search on google, that translates to 62.5ml per 5L. The 250ml mixing tube that came with the bike was marked at 80ml which he said was the mark he would recommend. This sounds a bit iffy to me. Surely the 62.5ml (5000ml/80 = 62.5ml) is they way to go? Yours... confused!
