I have a twin shock Bultaco 199b that I have totally restored, my son and I have practiced on it most days (lack of work) and a lot of enthusiasm
as we are new to this world. From the start, my son is very good so I thought I would upgrade to a newer bike.
I would love a four stroke, can you guys give me advice? Will this work for my son and me to have fun on? And maybe for him to compete on? Also can you tell me the pros and cons?
My standard bike (199b) with no mods if you do big jumps and hit the end stops it has twisted the forks a few times I simply loosen off the front end and put it between my legs and pull it back.
I did try it with out the loosening off and it seems to still come back ok. It never moves too far and is still very rideable.
Hi Chaps, My 199b front brake chrome drum was in perfect condition with new shoes fitted it worked well and would lock the front wheel if needed so all good. My only criticism was that adjusting it so it was just binding the handle bar lever had a lot of movement. Any way I had read a lot on here about buying a aluminium front bake operating arm to put on the clutch to increase the leverage and lighten the clutch operation (replacing the shorter steel one).
So as it was Sunday and In Motion were shut I thought I would simply swap them over putting the short steel operating arm on the front brake. Anyway with some adjustment the clutch was much improved (I also left off the return spring from the top of the clutch lever on the crankcase) I can know use it with two fingers. But what surprised me is the front brake is now fantastic! Much shorter travel one or two finger operation and still enough leverage to lock up the front wheel if needed.
And all for free. I just had to have a ride around the block (it is road legal) now my bike rides on two finger controls.
I see you have had a copy of the original air box Bracket made this looks good but the original one I have on my bike has a cicular foam seal around the top of it to seal it to the mudguard above.
I bought this in three large boxes having been in bits since the end of 1982 with 400 miles on the clock and the cross hatching on the original front tyre on the 8/3/15.
A complete rebuild later, It started after eleven kicks ( 33 years later) the second picture is at the MOT test on the 7/4/15 The reason the stickers were not on was I had to get the Mot before it closed! The whole shop came out to look at it they all loved it then home to put the stickers on.
The only parts of the rebuild I did not do was sandblast the frame and lace the wheels (mind you the offsets were wrong so I had to loosen off all the spokes and move the rims over so I might have well have built them)
I have been on the trials ground so much with it since, I have now put five gallons through it.
I will post more of the rebuild pictures.
I love this Forum I have read so many interesting posts.
Hi Chaps, I fitted a new Bing Carb Float as the old one did not like the alcohol in modern fuel. When i did a float test in a container of fuel only one side floated!
It now runs beautifully. So I spent the day with my mates at the Nash mills Trials ground. I put two gallons through it to day.
