Yep, just spoke to Importer a couple of days ago. Items such as Barrel, piston, silencer are not covered by manufacturers warranty after first month.

Under special circumstances within the first 6 months these items will be swapped out at 'cost'.

Thats Handy ain't it!!, why don't they just put: the only thing under warrenty after the first month is the dust caps

You say that it is being "Burnt Out". Am I to understand that it is plugged with oil residue? What gas / oil mixture are you using? Does the bike ever get thoroughly cleaned out? I ocassionally run mine up the road to burn out all of the oil residue.

I believe Ian uses 65:1 on his 125 (the one that's got the knackered silencer).

I use 50:1 on my 290. As you know mine gets a bit of a blow out now and then Mines fine.

Are these Sherco silencers not repackable, then?

In the US we recommend 80:1 oil gas mixture, this is the mix that is used in all of the Sherco Team bikes at the nationals. I have used this mix for years with no problems. Maybe there is a difference in our gas/oil, we use Maxima K2 synthetic.

The Sherco muffler is not repackable without cutting it completely apart and rewelding it. I know of a guy who did, he is an excellent welder and had no problem.

He had crashed and bent the muffler so he was experimenting to see if he could salvage it

If anyone is thinking of repacking the exhaust by cutting it open, the exhaust is split in to 2 compartments with an aluminium plate, the front half is packed with wire-wool (this part was ok, tho it may require excess oil/carbon to be burnt off) and the rear half is packed with a fiber glass material this can get burnt away with time so if you want to repack it I suggest you cut the exhaust outer skin in half just behind the spot welds, pull the rear of the exhaust off, this should leave the steel baffle pipe exposed then remove old packing and replace with new, slide the rear of the exhaust back on and get it welded back on.

I have been letting my tyre wear away my exhaust (not deliberately) and there is now a big hole on the side. Does anyone know if it would be possible to patch this? I was thinking along the lines of riveting on a patch of similar metal and adding some gasket paste round the circumference. I don't have easy access to a welder.

the gasket paste will blow out i had it on the black end of my silencer and it blew out my advice buy a new exhaust and the good thing about the new exhaust is it will seal porperly on the o rings it wont need repacking for a while and it looks nice im not sure how much it would be for a new one though

get a piece of alloy and apply silicone then pop rivet it over the hole. Good as new

good idea timp never thought of using silicone well it will save anyhill forking out for a new exhaust

For anybody with a similar problem to the original post - Noisy backbox, for your info.... the silencer was burnt out as advised by MRS and it was an immediate fix. Silencer went from sounding like a Micron to sounding like new.
