When i was last out on my bike the chain tensioner got wrappped round the back sprocket and the bolt and spring were lost, so i decided to order a new kit. And after fitting the bolt will not tighten and now fear the same will happen again I reilise the thread is stripped in rear swing arm. Is this a common fault for 06 betas? Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatley received cheers

The thread is very short on the bolt and not very strong, had this happen on my 04 due to taking it off too much to regrease it. Only take it off a few times a year and dont be tempted to tighten it too much or it will strip the thread, only option I can think of is a helicoil like mine, local garage may be able to do it for you for a few quid.

As per betarev3's reply re heli-coil, but would take to a specialist engineering firm who are more likely to have the appropriate engineering facilities to carry out the work.

Helicoil is pretty straightforward to install, for the owner, certainly for any garage.

Here, Grainger has the kits for about $40 US. which includes drill, special tap, tool, and 10 inserts.

You can practice a few times if uneasy about tackling it.

I have several sizes, as invariably the next thread to strip is a differnt size, can't make use of the 9 extra unused inserts in the other kit.... They are a great product though, and worth the money.

The late Beamish Suzukis never had tensioners from new. My 1980 RL325 rides fine without one.

Be careful if you are going to try this.

I'd make a bet that you will either loose the chain off the back sprocket because it becomes too loose on maximum deflection or you will damage the gearbox because it is too tight on maximum compression.

It is true that not all bikes have chain tensioners but they are fitted for a very good reason.

Had the same thing happen on my 02 270. I had to get a right angle drill and short bit to drill it out and then tap it and put the heli coil in. This was the first time I had ever put in a heli coil and the whole job was quite easy once I had the right tool to drill it out.

As the previous posts said I would also strongly advise not to run without one. Modern bikes run a lot more travel on the rear than the Beamish Suzuki mentioned in a different post. It is vital that the chain has enough free play. If you were to wedge against a rock the chain will be forced off and there needs to be sufficient free play to allow it to do so. Too tight and at best the chain may snap. At worst, gearbox, swinging arm, hub...... you get the picture!

If adjusted to allow sufficient free play though the chain will flap about like crazy and will probably flick off all the time.
