2005 Kickstart Not Engaging

My mates kickstart is not working, just freely turns and returns on the spring. There is no sound of it engaging at all, anyone else had this, what is it and more important is it a costly repair.

    Mine and the nephews both did this, when you kicked them they just go down then return, it was the ratchet on ours they were about
