Can anyone advise me on the best gearbox oil to buy? and also what to flush the old oil out with? some people say to run the engine with the flushing fluid in it for a bit, is this even safe?

Do not run it without gear box oil!

i figured it would be best to flush it to get the amount right, also its not good mixing 2 types of oil, I dont even know if the old oil is synthetic or not.

I was told by a mechanic of some repute, who specialises in trials bikes to flush out using the petrol /oil mix I put in the tank.

I had second thoughts about this when I got home so I used kerosine though I am sure diesel or parafin would do the same job. I have flushed a number of gear boxes for various reasons and and had no problems afterwards. Whatever you use though when you run the engine do not put the gearbox under any load.

If you feel you must flush the tranny go for it but.... If you have ever had a motor apart you would notice that unless you pull the clutch apart you will not flush all the old oil out of the motor. All sorts of oil will remain in the clutch plates so you will be mixing oils anyway. Now the clutch plates need the oil to function properly. Getting some cleaning solution in the plates along with oil can actually cause the clutch to work improperly.

ill just leave it to drain itself then, cant hurt it. what oil is best?

I think it's not recommended to use fully synthetic oil in the gearbox, because sometimes the clutch will slip. The synthetic oil is very "slippery". I think that a mineral oil would be better.

its in the bike and feels fine so far =] gear changes are alot smoother and havnt noticed any slipping of the clutch. thanks alot =]
