Just put a new regulator on my beta to make the fan work (and it does now work) but now im not getting any spark, I removed the CDI so i could work easier and connected it all back up according to the wires, put the coil back on too but im not getting a spark, I havnt actually tried firing the bike up, just held the plug against the head and also just held it to see if I die or not. Im worried I may have damaged the CDI? i dropped it onto a concrete floor from about 1ft, would this be enough to damage it?

id be grateful for any help as im now stumped.

make sure the spade with the white sleeve goes the to right spade

i would not think it would damage that easily.

Can you try the spark plug in another bike, just to eliminate that?

That shouldn't have damaged a solid state ignition but stranger things have happened. I agree though it's more likely connection related. One thing I've learned over the years is the more dramatic the failure mode the more obvious the problem. Make sure your kill switch is not messed up too. Be careful with sparks around gas. Trust me on this. Been there. Done that. Got the burned T-shirt.

when you took the coil off there should have been a wire earthed to the top mounting bolt of the coil,check to see if that was connected back up as it can easily be overlooked because its awkward to see and get to.

Is there a proper way that I can tell that im getting a good solid earth? ive bolted it where i think it went and tried several other places but still no spark, but it would be nice to eliminate that as a problem.

i would have thought the best place to get a good solid earth would be on the engine itself,ie the cylinder head as thats where the spark plug gets its earth from.try holding the wire securely to one of the cylinder head bolts.ive got the day off tomorrow and my bike is an 06 so ill dig out the wiring and make a note of what goes where and try and post it on here for you

Thanks alot mtwallet but ive managed to sort it now, heres where I went wrong....

I replaced the bolts that held the fan on with hex key bolts because the old ones were a pain to get off with a screw driver. The bolts had a very thin coat of something on them which made them black, so the mount for the coil which is where the earth wire is bolted to wasnt earthing properly because of whatever coating was on the bolt. Ive replaced the bolt with the old one and im now getting a spark.

The way i tested it was by attaching a wire to the coil with the earth held solid against the coil with a nut and bolt and then connected it to the positive terminal on a car battery I had on charge. got a good solid earth and a nice fat spark so I knew it was definatly an earthing problem.

hopefully the bike with be back together tomorrow and I can go riding on sunday.
