My son rode his first proper trial on Sunday and found that the clutch was slipping so badly that it would hardly go. Up to then it was just fine. I don't know what happened and have no experiance of these automatic clutches.

Does it need replacing or is there something that can be adjusted. It's not done many miles from new two years ago.

BTW the oil was dirty but level OK. I changed it mid trial but no difference.

Any help would be great.

Hi BIGFOOT my son rode a GasGas 50 for about 18 months. We never had a problem with the clutch .The only thing i think it may be is the piston on the clutch lever is sticking or maybe the lever needs adjusting.I also have seen one converted to a manual clutch.The two problems we did have with the GasGas 50 was the frame broke where the top shock mounting fits on to the frame.The second one was the first gear broke a tooth off the cog.I must add to this he did ride a trial nearly every weekend for the 18 months we owned it including some nationals.I hope you get the clutch sorted on yours and your son enjoys his GasGas as much as my son did.

I check the manual clutch adjustment and it seems fine. You can easlily feel it working but as you say it's maybe not coming off completely.

Is there anyone out there who's looked in side a bike automatic clutch and can tell me how it works. I'm guessing its centifugal.

Is the clutch slipping or just not engage very quickly???? My son's 50 the clutch would not engage without reving the bike up a lot. After some consultation with Jim Snell {US GG guru} I discovered that the clutch in the 50's have 3 metal plates in them, 2 thin plates and 1 plate approx. twice as thick. We replaced one of the thinner plates for one of the thicker ones and it worked perfectly, at idle the bike had no creep but give it the slightest throttle it would move. It made the bike it made the bike much easier to ride.

You need to make a special tool to remove the clutch hub, a 15mm socket machined down just enough to slide down into the clutch hub.

I hope that this helps it is not really that complicated to do

BIGFOOT if you need the socket to take the clutch off your GAS GAS 50 ive got one you can have. If you need it let me now on this forum. so you can e mail your address or phone number to me. so i can send the socket by post to you.I dont have any use for the socket as we no longer have the GAS GAS

Bigfoot, my 8 yr old rides a 2000 model Gas Gas TXT50.

We are the 3rd owner and it has the original clutch, I'm told, with no problems.

So far the bike has been very reliable.

We have installed a Bosch platinum sparkplug one step hotter, cut the lid on the airbox to let more air in (a BIG help !) , cleaned and packed with grease ALL electrical connections, and installed a homemade deflector to keep mud out of the radiator.

I change the transmission fluid after every ride with non-synthetic Dextron III.
