October 15, 200421 yr Hi all... My bike was loosing oil when out for a ride the other day. FOund it to be leaking from the sight glass for the oil. SO tightened it up...but being a plastic thread..doesn't seem to grip that securely..so I'm guessing it might work loose again soon. I was thinking to use thread-lock or plumbers tape on it. Is that a good or bad idea...or any other ideas??.......thanks in advance
October 15, 200421 yr Stu - You can try the plumbers tape, but a new site glass is cheap and the best fix .
October 16, 200421 yr Author THanks both...will use some silicone untill the new one arrives...which I'll order soon.
October 19, 200421 yr Author DOH!!!!!!!!! Should have listened to you both!!..Here's a classic case of me thinking I know better. At the last minute I thought..I know..rather than silicon it I will thread-lock it. Well it broke..and I thought because I'd overtightened it..BUT actually it broke because the thread-lock reacted with the plastic and ate it all up!!.....Hopefully there is now a new one on the way from BVM Any ideas on a temporary fix anyone??..whilst I wait for the new one???..My mate here reckons the drain plug from a Lambretta will fit, so he's gonna try and find me one today
October 19, 200421 yr Within four doors of each other there are three trials riders on my street. I always make sure I have the same bike as one of the others so I can always find replacement parts. They sure seem to break alot of parts on their bikes, though. Unless you find a plug that threads in real easy, I would not mess with it. Just park it and cover the opening with a rag. If you need the part quickly, pay the extra postage and write it off to education expenses. A short term fix might be a rubber expansion plug from an automotive supply store. They have a nut on them that expands the rubber when you tighten it. It's good enough for the high pressure of a cooling system, so it would be good enough for the crankcase. Again, short term. Good luck, Richard
October 19, 200421 yr Author Cheers Richard.!!..WOW..wish I lived in your street!!..thats amazing. Anyway..there is a new one on its way from BVM (they sent it same day I ordered it!!)..so I wont have to wait long. WILL however try to find the rubber thing you suggested. Cheers
