what is pinking?

A misunderstanding of the word "pinging", which is pre-detonation.

    Try using the highest Octane Unleaeded you can get Shell is a good one or 50/50 with Avgas, as said above pinking is pre ignition/detonating of the fuel via heat or compression or both

    Can it not be tuned out at the carb though rather than altering the fuel octane?

    Is it related to altitude too?

    there must be a good reason for it happening.
