Rake And Trail

Featured Replies

Hello,

What might be an average rake and trail dimentions for trials motorcycles?

Since trials riding is unheard of here in East Texas I am reworking a 1985 Honda XR-200R for the task. The rear frame will be rearranged and narrowed for low seat height, the ProLink has been removed to allow the monoshock to act directly on the swingarm, the enduro gas tank has been replaced by a 1-gallon XR-80 tank and the front fender will be replaced by slimmer one mounted lower.

The foot pegs will be moved back four to five inches, the kick stand moved back to the swing arm, the muffler replaced by an aluminum sport bike unit that will be cut down to fit either in the traditional rear mount or vertcally in the space behind the monoshock. The overstuffed factory seat is gone in favor of an aluminum plate. The air filter box has been repaced by a pair of Unifilter green "socks" fitted to elbows so they are mounted vertically behind and below the carburetors, out of the way.

The steering stop ahead of the lower stem bearing has been cut away and replaced by a pair of small blocks behind the lower triple tree. The swing arm will be shortened one inch if I cannot find a shorter one. The side covers will be replaced by screen wire. I will make an aluminum skid plate for it from 6mm stock on hand. The factory 13-50 sprocket ratios will be changed to 12-54 if I can find the sprockets. If I cannot find the sprockets, I will remachine an 11-tooth #50 sprocket to fit the Honda output shaft. That will put the final drive ratio near 4.5 to 1.

It will not be pretty, but it should climb and turn well if I can get some decent rake and trail numbers to work with. The factory rake and trail specificaitons are 26 degrees rake and 104.14 mm (4.1 inches) trail.

Thanks,

Most modern bikes rake is in the 24 degree area (the fork tubes)

I have a 74 Yamaha that I modified the frame and have the forks

at 24.5 degree's, trail is in the area of 2.5 inches,

the triple trees have 2.5 degree's of rake in them,

most bikes have a degree or 2 of differance between the top and

bottom clamps.
