May 7, 201016 yr My name is Dana Salsman and I live in Washington state in the US. I have ventured into the trials scene periodicly since the 70s. My dad bought my brother and I a 247 Montesa Cota to share. He told us that we would have to ride trials for 1 year ( to properly learn to ride a motorcycle ) before we could do any form of racing. These words of wisdom fell on my deaf teenage ears as I soon purchased a 125 TM Suzuki. My brother kept with the trials over the years adding MX as as another way to enjoy motorcycles. In the late 80s while visiting on vacation he mentioned he was selling his TY 350. I bought it and had it shipped to my home. After inquiring about local trials I hooked up with the Central Arizona Trials club and rode the TY for a season in the novice class.The next year I was advanced to the intermediate class and bought a striper Beta. I rode a few events on it and sold it. My next foray into trials would come in the late 90s as a side light to vintage MX which I had started in 1996. I bought a TY 175 as most of our vintage motocross events also included a vintage trials in the same weekend. Lately I have ridden more trials than motocrosses. My trials stable now includes the TY 175, a RL suzuki, a Greeves Anglian, and a B40 Bsa. the BSA is my current weapon of choice. I have lurked on this site for a couple of years and finally decided to sign up. All is good.
May 7, 201016 yr Dana Good to see you on the site. I was a member of CAT in the 70's before a two year tour in the UK. Rode with them some in the late 80's, your name sounds very familar so we may have rode together at some time. I was on a TY175 and my boy rode a SWM, we lived in Tucson.
May 7, 201016 yr Author I didn't ride any events in the 70s although I watched 1 up by Pinnacle Peak. I joined CAT in the late 80s. For the last 13 years I have been involved with the group that puts on the Chehalis Classic AHRMA national MX and Trials. The trials is layed out by Derek Belvoir and boasted a turnout of 104 entries last year. We traveled to the Phoenix AHRMA national in 1998 & 1999.
