I have just replaced the front fork seals and dust caps on my 1998 TX270.

I now want to fill each fork with 300cc of 7W oil.

On all the forums and the Jim Snell (Gas Gas) youtube they say just unscrew top bolt, lift up the spring to one side and pour in the oil.

When I do this the drain screw comes out. What am I doing wrong?

When I dismantled the fork the drain screw attaches to the front fork inner tube, so how do i unscrew the top bolt without the drain screw coming out.

Sounds stupid but could I put the fork oil in via the drain.

Your help is much appreciated.

I'm having a little difficulty picturing this in my mind. Drain screws are usually small Phillip's head capscrews that are located at the back side of the lower leg.

If you mean the large Allen capscrew at the very bottom of the lower leg (up inside the recess), that is called a "base bolt" and is what holds the cartridge in the lower leg. That Allen

capscrew should have a copper washer and be tight.

The upper tube should be dropped down a little to expose the spring (below the grey PVC preload spacer), the fork tilted over some and the oil poured in between the coils.

Could you post a photo of the drain screw you mean?

I do mean the 'base bolt'.

'Doh' I understand now, it makes sense to lower the upper tube (didnt think of that at the time).

When I changed the seals and dustcap I put the whole fork together to make sure everything fitted ok. Went to put the oil in by just unscrewing the top bolt and out came the base bolt, just couldnt work it out last night.

Hopefully that will sort it, and let you know with photos if it doesnt.
