March 9, 201115 yr About to pull apart the motor for more in depth investigations. Main issue is a hesitancy at low speed / initial throttle opening + Poor / unstable tick over leading slowly towards a stall without a regular blip of throttle. (when it's warm I notice that putting the choke on helps for a few seconds but of course it soon starts to cough and 4 stroke) I have been through the carb carefully, including increasing the size of the idle jet. Mixture screw does not make much difference past 2 turns out (Less than 2 turns just means it won't idle at all). Overall I happy with the carb. I checked the reeds and they don't sit well against the reed block, a visual gap exists along the tips. However having removed, reversed and refitted with a much better sealing the issues still exist. Either way I will fit new ones. I am thinking this is another indicator of the bikes life up to now I am seriously considering the flywheel seal is not great - again probably gives similar symptoms. So I will aim to fit seals and reeds this weekend, gives me a chance to have a good look inside for any other issues!(and beats doing work round the house!) Questions: 1) Ignition timing; how can I check the current setting is correct (std), are there marks on the casings? 2) Anyone else solved similar issues to that above? 3) Anything about the build I should be aware of? 4) Will I need gentle heat to help split the casings? 5) Would you recommend ordering any common issue parts before I strip it? Any advice no matter how great or small would be greatly appreciated.. Andy

I'm no expert, but I'm guessing you will find the problem to be outside the engine case, Reeds or carb. I know I would have hesitate splitting that case unless I knew I had to. Good luck and keep us posted!
March 10, 201115 yr it sounds like the prblem i had when mine was doin it the revs were very slow to drop when the engine was reved it turned out to be crank seals the hardest part for me was gettin the fligh wheel off the previous owner had buggered the threads up for the puller
March 10, 201115 yr Author Yamxj Its encouraging that you solved similar issues with cranks seals - thanks for the reply. Top end is now apart and no major issues so far, in fact other than a de-coke it looks good to go. Flywheel off tomorrow night then into the casings. Slight issue is GG Uk couldn't get parts out today so will have to wait till Saturday to rebuild it. Gandalf - Yes I hate house work but fortunately I love pulling engines apart! March 10, 201115 yr after i sorted that out the main bearings went so i did the rebuild myself never striped a bike engine before so was i bit worried but it turned out not too bad i took step by step photos marked the position of the stator plate and it was fine started second kick the worst part was getting the kick start spring back in properly there is a little notch in the centre spacer for the spring to go into i found it after 2 or 3 hours trying to get the clutch case on mine is a 2000 280 but i guess they are similar good luck
