How can I liven up a dead rear end? ...that doesn't sound good (resist, as I'm doing right now, with dirty responses). My rear end suspension is too soft on my 06 Montesa 4rt. How much extra spring can you get from tightening the spanner nut? 2 turns? My hand adjuster knob makes no difference. I have yet to try the spanner as I can't find a tool to turn it.

ALSO, I see a nip for adding nitrogen. Does anyone ever re-fill their nitrogen? Do bikes lose their nitrogen after time and is the result that it goes soft? I've never understood what a suspension "re-build" consists of. I'm new at this so thanks in advance.

It is likely that your shock needs a rebuild if the damping adjuster has no effect.

I reckon it will be worth adjusting the "C" rings first and get some decent boing into it. You can get a c spanner to do it properly but you can also use a drift and hammer to loosen the lock rign and turn up the spring pressure. Tighten the spring until the bike only squashes down about 50-60mm when you stand only the pegs at a standstill. Make sure you tighten the lock ring well.

Once this is set you can then try the damping adjuster.

There is no point having it re built until you have tried to adjust it and set it up properly with no change in damping etc.

slacken off the lock ring with a Yorkshire screwdriver as above and tighten the adjuster till it 'sits' slightly with the weight of the bike and drops about 2 - 3 inches with you stood on the pegs.

set the damping in the middle..

if the things still going up and down like a kid on a pogo then the shock needs a proper service by a specialist.. you dont want all bells and whistles just ask for it to be as good as new.

I assume the Yorshire screwdriver is the same thing as a Manchester spanner???

I don't think you wil feel much difference with only 2 turns.

If adjusting the spanner nut is not enough, you can fit a linkage plate upgrade kit:

I've refilled the nitrogen on my 315R (same system) but it was not nessecary. It had not lost any pressure, witch is logical as nitrogen is thicker than air.

Be very carefull when you try to check the nitrogen pressure. It's only a small volume so try to prevent any leak when measuring.
