I recently rebuilt my sons gas gas boy after replacing a broken gear selector shaft. When I start the bike and select a gear the rear wheel turns without needing to rev the bike. If I pull in the clutch lever the rear wheel keeps turning. I have rebuilt everything according to the diagrams provided by gas gas - I think.

Any thoughts on why this is happening?

is the bike on a stand with the rear wheel off the ground when this is happening?

yes, but if I put my hand on the wheel to try and slow it down or stop it the engine stalls.

could the clutch plates be stuck ?

what would cause that to happen?
