I am a bit of a beginner in the world of trials bikes so go easy on me please.

Please could someone help before I start pulling my hair out.

I have an old TY50 that will not start.

It did start but it would not run for very long so I put a new plug and points and now it wont fire at all.

There is a spark at the plug but barely at the points and I have been adjusting them constantly to try and get a spark.

There are new points and I still cannot get a decent spark and the bike will not fire.

Is the timing out and if so how do I go about setting it to the correct timing easily.

Any advice would be fantastic.

Try putting the new plug back in to the cylinder head (make sure it is bone dry) . try starting the engine (say half a dozen kicks. Remove the plug if it is still dry you may have a fuel problem. If it is wet (with petrol no water droplets) put the plug back in , try starting without choke . If it still dosent fire its back to the ignition.

I'd try a new condenser. You shouldn't get a big spark at the points.

Not to distract you from the ignition situation, you mentioned that it ran for a while and then quit. You may also want to check out the carburator. When was it last cleaned? You may well find that the pilot jet is clogged. Don't ignore the previous posts on getting the ignition right, but also check the carb.

I had issues like that twice on 50cc bikes. (MR50 & JR50) Both times it was the condensor. It seems like any condensor will work. On one I used a Sportser condensor...... on the other an old Ford condensor.
