May 26, 201412 yr i went to install a lanyard kill switch on the 2013 beta 300 four stroke today. i assume it is an open circuit as i popped both the red and black kill switch button connectors off and the bike kept running. - i know most lanyards are for close circuit systems (e.g. replacing the single pushbutton style kill switch) so figure i'll need to ensure i have the right lanyard before cutting wires and being unable to return the one i've got. has anyone hit this issue and got any advice? thanks in advance...
May 26, 201412 yr The kill switch is open circuit, when you press the button it becomes closed circuit and sends the electricity to earth which kills the engine. By just popping off your red & black wires you're still leaving it open circuit, if you'd have touched them to earth (or maybe just the red one) the engine would have stopped. Lanyards work the same way, magnet attached = open circuit, magnet unattached = closed circuit to earth. If you temporarily connect the wires from the lanyard to your kill switch red & black wires, you should find that it cuts the engine when you take the magnet off.
May 26, 201412 yr Author thanks for the fast reply, ourian. i'll give that a shot and just make sure i don't cut the lanyard connectors for soldering until i know it works then.
May 27, 201412 yr If you want to keep the original kill switch just in case the lanyard fails to work (it's been known) if you wire the switches up as below, then either will cut the engine.
May 28, 201412 yr I kept both on the Beta. Just ordered one for the Cota and will keep button kill as well. I still use the button to turn off bike and then flick lanyard off throttle hand. Lanyard never seems to leave its magnetic spot? Habit on the button I suppose. The Cota has lean sensor to cut motor at 65 degrees (sideways) as well. Mags
