I have never seen a pair in person, but are they any different than mechanics gloves?

Very similar with some a bit thinner material, none of the palm padding and such, for a good grip, snug fit, and tactile feedback, like riding naked!

RYP had some good house brand ones that were inexpensive although I have not looked lately.

Good grips help, I like the medium density Renthols.

Have a look at some of the cycling gloves that mountain bikers use, they may be cheaper but do the same job.

I've scraped my knuckles a few times on trees so I prefer MX gloves with extra protection:

My gloves of choice are the next best thing to no gloves at all, and only $5 at Home Depot.

They don't get smelly in the summer, dry quickly, and you can forget you are wearing gloves since they are so thin.
