Getting small amounts of engine coolant into the transmission after several rides on my 92 zero. I am aware of the rotton/ corroded coolant passages any guesses were it might be getting in other than that? Maybe water pump shaft seal? I found a gasket set from a place called Athena but no seal set. They are somewhere in Europe, anyone deal with them in the USA?

Just pull off the water pump cover.

The most common place for coolant to get in the transmission is through the water pump shaft seal. It's an easy fix. That is the first thing I'd try.

Flint, have you managed to get out much and meet many of the KS guys at the trials? Possibly not, seems most activity down in Wichita area.

My Gara 260 did the same at about 5 years from new ,so pulled apart the crank case halves, and found small pit holes in water pump tunnel. put some very good goop that worked for 8mths then started leaking again. then got our beta importer in NZ to get new case halves put together. mint for 2 years, but same thing happened yet again. it sat in my shed for 16 years , until I saw the light and got a 09 Raga 300. now the 260 has a TLR 250 motor in it, best thing for it.

Ill go pull the cover this morning. Will the pump shaft slide out or is it pinned or snap ringed to the drive gear? I only know of one other trials bike in my area, Montesa cota early seventys model that has not ran in years. Have not met any other riders as the Wichita and KC/MO clubs are a fair distance from me.

Pulled the pump cover and the impeller. Cover and pump housing have no doubt been replaced as they are clean, but back in the shaft bore it is corroded. Looks like the pump shaft needs to come out from the clutch basket side after removing the cover and whatever else is in the way. Sound right to you guys? Ahh the joys of a water cooled bike.

Sounds about right, yes. Sounds like you have a clue to what you are doing as well, which is sometimes hard to find nowadays.

I am not sure just how many older parts American Beta has nowa, but there is a couple other sources of older bike stuff if you are not aware.

Ron Commo, the previous Beta importer had lots of stuff and may well still. Not sure his number now as he has moved.

Mike Komer at the Tryalsshop in NY has lots of stuff, and is likely in touch with Ron as well.

I have no idea where to find a breakdown on that bike, myself. Only Beta I had was a Techno motor. Maybe similar, maybe not? Lineaway probably knows.

Steve in Manhattan is a parts guy for many things, but not sure old betas are one of them. He may know some local areas to ride though, as you guys seem to be only about half hour apart. He may certainly be able to introduce you to more modern bikes though.

Thanks guys. I printed the IPB. Some parmatex #2 and a seal from my bearing supplier might have it fixed for now.

I fixed one with JB weld in 2002. As far as I know it is still working.

If the shaft seal dont do the trick its probably time for some JB or fiberglass resin. Keeping my fingers crossed.
