I rebuilt the caliper last week. It seemed ok in the garage and around the garden but stopped working during a trial today. One of the pistons seems to have stopped moving.

I'm going to rebuild it again during the week, but before I do does anyone have any tips?

Barfy, You could possibly still have an air issue, you didn't say which caliper but as you know

the back one can give a lot of grief.

I'm sure you did the job right David, but probably a seal not seated when you rebuilt (easy to push the piston back in distorting the Seal), did you put new ones in, or use the old ones? Did you use a bit of fluid to lube the seals? I always bleed the brakes with the Resevoir empty and the biggest syringe you can get hold of. Your then pushing all the fluid and air up to the Resevoir (push it in slowly whilst lightly tapping the caliper and brake hose) so never really have any problems.

I think it's more a trapped seal or badly put in piston rather than air. One piston is coming in and out no problem and the other isn't moving. Looking at it, I think it was braking against the caliper rather than the pad when it was working around the garden.

I'll pull it apart again tomorrow or Wednesday.

Get yourself a dental examination mirror / kit (about £5 on Ebay) to help you check and clean the seal groove thoroughly. Check your pads are worrn evenly, pad face an back parallel and that your piston(s) have no dint or burrs where the.

I think that it was the seal. It was a real bu33er to blow out the piston with the compressor. The seals looked clean and ok, so I put back in the piston. Now it seems to be working much more positively than just before it stopped working. See how it goes at the weekend.
