November 14, 201411 yr Ive recently bought a lovely 1999 bultaco/sherco trials bike. unfortunately the previous owner tried to disguise it as a 2002 sherco 290 and made a terrible job of it so i am currently trying to restore it to its original condition. Im just not sure on the engine size. Also i was wondering how to change the oil? and finally the access to the radiator cap is almost impossible and i wanted to get in to top up the water and coolant but it seems almost impossible to gain access as the electrics are obstructing the filler cap. Any kind of help would be appreciated as i am keen to get this bike back to running and riding condition asap. thanks.
November 14, 201411 yr Almost all parts are avalible thru your Sherco dealer. Remove the electronics to get to the radiator cap, only fill to the bottom of the filler tube. To drain the gearbox oil, remove a centercase allen bolt, located on the bottom left side between the mag cover and counter shaft sprocket, just above the skid plate. Sherco has repair and parts manuals online. Enjoy your new ride!
November 14, 201411 yr Author Thanks very much. do you have any links to those online manuals? and do you know anywhere that will sell a cheap mudguard with bultaco decals.
November 14, 201411 yr Author i also tried to take the coil off to gain access to the radiator cap but when i tried to un do the nut the thread assembly would turn round with it. Any suggestions because very hard to gain access to this area. much appreciated
November 15, 201411 yr Here for info! http://www.shercousa.com/?action=6 Splatshop does a great job on parts! None on the cheap! Usually a long straight screwdriver will knock the rad cap loose, then a long skinny funnel to fill, or a syringe? They will puke out any overage, so a bit of expansion room is best! Look in with a mirror if needed, should be just over the cores a bit as stated. Different coolants do not mix well, so other than topping off with distilled water, best to drain, flush , and start over with a good mix or the premixed stuff from the bike shop me thinks! And if age is unknown, just do it, as the stuff does loose its corrosion inhibitors over time. Takes a pint or so to refill, not much. Hope that helps, now go read, TA!
