Going to change the oil on my lttle bike. the manual says 500g of oil. before i go weighing oil and loosing some in the transfer does anyone know how many mls this equates to?

Are you sure it gives the quantity by weight? Measuring oil in grams just doesn't seem right

Anyway density of oil is somewhere between 850kg/m3 to 900kg/m3

500g at 900kg/m3 1litre would weight 900g so 500g would be 555ml

(edit) Density of ATF oil is approx 865kg/m3 this would equate to 500g being 578ml

it doesnt make sense to me to have it by weight, like you have shown the volume changes with different oils. but seeing as you know quite a bit about oil i will be using an 80 weight oil. so 550mls seems like a sensible place to start.

If you google the density of the oil you're using and measure the temperature of the oil, just to make it more confusing, oil's density changes with temperature, which is why they've probably specified the amount of oil by weight, i.e. it's volume will change with temp but it's mass will stay the same.

But I agree 550mls seems about right at 20 degrees celsius

Just fill it until you start to see oil in the sight glass on the side of the case with the bike level.
