I attached a 12v battery to a blue wire that seems to go up towards the rectifier, under the tank, and the fan works fine. But when l connect the 2 wires from the thermostat together, it does not work? With engine running, and revved up.

Could it be the stater not working?  or could it be the rectifier? 

Any pointers how to check what bit's working, l do have a volt meter.
