Hi,

I just buy mint conditions 120 hours used Montesa 260 RT 2014.

Bike working like new and when engine is cold it´s starts very easily, but after 30 minutes driving when engine is hot starting is nightmare.

If i give little fuel straigth to throttle body engine start but running only few seconds. Then after 15-25 minutes waiting engine start and running like new.

I already adjust idle speed to around 1850rpm, also i check throttle cable freeplay, then i reset ecu many times but nothing help:(

Would someone help what I need  to do next?

 

 

if you have already update the idle to ~1800, then I would check valve clearance as that would be my first thought.  I will start with that and see if that sorts it out.  My 2 cents at least.

 

Other simple things to consider: (good to do anyway)

Always worth doing some standard maintenance like flush and replace the coolant to be sure heat isn't causing some of the issues, not common but have had a friend boiling his fuel and fresh fluid sorted it for him. 

Double check the fuel pump filter isn't gummed up (not likely the primary issue, but combined with heat maybe a contributor?)

Before you waste a lot if time and energy. Open up the air screw a full turn counter clockwise  Let idle for a full minute and go ride it for at least 20 minutes and see how it feels. Its almost always low idle is the problem.

 As mentioned, a new plug and make sure your tank is venting properly.

I try rise idle speed but that not help.

Plan is check valve clearance also but that is not readon for that poor start because with extra fuel engine start.

I think that fuel pump not make pressure or injector not open when engine is hot. maybe part of reason is very hot fuel…

Try new plug 

Clean throttle body 

Check all connections etc

Clean pump filter or see if you can swap a tank

 

How tall are you? I am 5'4" and can cold start my 4RT very easily but when it is hot I need to stand on the pegs and give a firm kick. When it's cold, just a lazy push down on the lever but when hot, lean bars against a tree, stand on the pegs and give a forceful kick but not fast.

I am 178cm tall and 85kg so that is not reason, I can easily start my friend Montesa when engine is hot but he not can  mine.

 

 

I found the problem.

Fuel pump is not good. When pump is warm, pump needs 8-9 amps to starting but after that need only 1-1.5 amps.

I have a 2014 cota 260 and it won't start now. Never had an issue until recently. Tried reset etc with no luck. How many turns out counterclockwise on idle screw should I have from fully seated

From fully seated is not the starting point. 3/4 to 1 turn out from where it quit working is what I would try. 

That would be counter clockwise. How long have you owned the bike? What elevation? Is it well used? Did you change the plug. You have oil. The list can be long.

I agree with linaway start by going 3/4 to 1 turn out (counter clockwise) from where it was when it stopped working first.  If that dose not fix it I would start by checking if you have spark, if not double check the throttle has a bit of play in it as a pinched cable might not return everything back to 0 and the ECU might be preventing starting, then check ground connections, consider checking if the valve adjustment is correct, however it if went from running fine to not starting that isn't usually the issue, they will be hard start first if that is the problem in most cases.

Had the bike for 5 years now, only has about 3 hours total lifetime. I had some health issues that prevented me from riding etc so bike has been sitting. Changed plug, gas, reset etc and it won't start. Last night I adjusted the idle screw however I dropped screwdriver and lost count LOL. Just looking to get it back to where I started? Before I lost count

Once you rule out everything else, it will end up being the need to adjust the valve clearances very carefully and accurately.   Same thing happened with four out of four 4RT's that I rode from 2005 to 2020 they just didn't want to start one day and a valve clearance adjustment fixed every one of them.  Owned two of them at a time which made trouble-shooting simple.
