James Lampkin won the Ilkley Grand National time and observation trial on Middleton Moor after a tense battle with Summerbridge electrician and Glusburn builder Nathan Wrigglesworth. The Bradley plumber and tiler lost just five marks in his winning ride. Gamble was matching Lampkin until he halted on the third lap in the second of two new sections named High Knott just before the legendary Kex Beck hazards alongside the A 59 trunk road.

Barnoldswick precision engineer Anthony Ayrton set the pace, lapping the ten mile all moorland course in 1 hr.52m.04 s and was also the second Over 40’s challenger behind Glusburn builder Nathan Wrigglesworth. Ian Myers was the first to appear at the Beamsley Beacon section on lap two where observer Hazel Pullan endured a very cold wind blowing across the valley. Former sidecar champion Robin Luscombe arrived having missed an opening section. He admitted a twenty-one year lapse since he first tackled the Ilkley Motor Club’s classic time trial. Lusky persuaded James Whitham to compete and was planning to guide him round. No worries there because the world famous former Grand Prix competitor and top Eurosport superbike television commentator got his Sherco home in seventeenth place losing only eleven time penalties. The ever smiling Gisburn lady Victoria Peel managed a lap last year and went one better on Saturday with a twenty third placing and twenty one time penalties.
