General Trials Talk

General discussion on the sport of Observed Motorcycle Trials

  1. I've decided on a TRS one but I'm getting mixed reviews between the One R and RR. I've heard for a very average rider (like me) the One R is forgiving but offers the versatility of the other models without having to "tame it". I've also however heard people who say they find the RR perfectly smooth and not too much of a handful. I totally get that rider ability playa a massive part but I was looking for any experience or advice subjective to an average rider looking to improve some of the "trick" type skills such as blips and hopping etc. Thanks.

It's that time of year when I look to change bikes, for the last 4 years I've had 300 Gasers and they've been great, light with bags of power on tap. This year however I quite fancy trying a 4rt, I've had a few goes on friends bikes and yet being completely different to the Gas Gas, ie heavier with less power, I've always jumped off with a smile thinking maybe I'll try one. Has anyone made the jump recently and if so how does it compare long term? Did you swop back to 2 stroke or stick with the Honda? Let me know how you got on? Cheers Ed

I am thinking about buying a pair of Gaerne Balance oiled boots as they have the old vintage look about them. Does anybody know if they are any good? I am going to buy them online and want to make sure I get the correct size. My Alpinestar No-stop boots are a size 10. I have heard that the Gaerne boots are a big fit, does anybody know for sure how they fit compared to the Alpinstar boot? Thanks for the help. Paul

One of my friends bought around a barrel (well the liner) from a 2000 Honda XR400 tonight to see what I thought. The bike has been burning a lot of oil recently and he decided to change the valve guide seals and piston rings. However, upon checking the barrel there are some very minor marks. Certianly NOT scoring, more like 'water' marks for want of a better description. I was wondering if it was worth having the barrel honed or if the new rings would possibly clean/polish out the very faint marks? Any advice welcome.

What is a good way of physically securing a modern trials bike. Enduro bikes can be chained through the frame but I can't see a way of doing that with a trials bike. It looks like you could chain it up but it would be easy to unbolt forks or wheels to remove the chain. Even if you removed both wheels, they are so light that a single man could just carry it off. Short of keeping it in a cage, I can't see how you can secure the bike within a locked garage. Any ideas?

I'm relatively new to trials. I am going to move to a newer model bike and being a yamaha mx fan, I'm wondering why Scorpa bikes don't seem to be as popular as others with the pros. Is the bike ok and the other companys spend more to sponsor pros, or is their a problem with Scorpa?

R2's got some pics of a trial in Northern China, seems pretty hard. Be afraid. If the chinese take to trials they'll rule it. Imagine trials bikes coming out of China. Hopefully they'll be better than some of the rubbish they're putting out for the road.

Wow.... How's this for a scoop of breaking news! Apparently Dougie rode a Gasser many years ago and no one knew!!!!! Well, that's according to the guy selling a Gasser on eBay (sorry can't link it as viewed using eBay app on phone) It's advertised as a 99-2000 and the guy he bought it from said it was Dougs bike... Innocent and naive or just a little dumb? PS: bike looks in good nick based on small pics on phone

Hi, New to all this. Always fancied a go at trials, but never really got around to it. Due to a previous (road-track racing) injury I've got to take it relatively easy until I have a bit of metal removed; was thinking it might be a good time to have a play at some basic trials as doing enduro, which I'd hoped to have a play with this year, is probably a bit risky. So; what are the possibilities for entering a basic-style trial on an enduro bike? I'm lead to believe a lot of trials offer the option for enduro bikes to enter. Can I just sign up and go along, or do I need to do ACU stuff, etc (haven't renewed my road-race ACU licence this year as won't be needing it fo…

  13. Hi all iv been watching alot of the 80,s 90,s and 00,s World trials videos over the past few weeks as i injured my shoulder mountain bikeing. And obviously now I want another trials bike to injur my other shoulder on lol, looking at what alot of the 90,s bikes are capable of how much better realy is say a 2009 evo or rev3 over a 1999 techno, especially from a novices point of view. Obviously if your splatting 6ft rock faces I'd imagine the slight weight reduction will help, but from a middle of the road novice point of view? , Iv had a few bikes sherco betas gasgas all old ish early to mid 00,s versions iv got a budget of around 1500-2000 but thinking shall I go the othe…

My son's handlebars broke Sunday while riding very difficult sections. We were hammering expert lines at the site of our club trial last month. We were halfway through our "second loop", and I had ridden through the trap first. After passing through the end gate, I glanced back to watch Ian come through. but he waved me back to the start gates. When I got around to where he was, he was holding the whole right side of his Renthals, connected to the motorcycle by only the throttle cable and brake line! Luckily, he was doing some small front wheel hops while waiting for me to ride through. If the bars had broken anywhere else, especially in the sections, the results would h…

I have just bought a new pair of Gaernes- I havn't actually used them yet on the bike, but they feel great on, easily the best pair of boots I have had. Got them from trialsuk.co.uk, great service and arrived within two days. Anyway, as they are not the natural leather ones that need oilling, I just wondered what tips anyone had for looking after them as there was no info with them. Thanks

Does anyone carry this brand here in the U.S.? And is the Sidi Trial Zero boot and the Sidi Discovery boot the same? The Alpine Stars are gettin' powerful gamey and need to be put out to pasture.
