General Trials Talk

General discussion on the sport of Observed Motorcycle Trials

Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows if speedway bikes still use 350x19 trials tyres, and if they do, where do they get them. I think that some of the older trials bike conversions, such as Bantam Trials bikes, would only take a 350 tyre, without extensive widening modifications to the rear suspension.

Contemplating a move to South America. Are there any resources / forums / etc. that would help me determine what Trials communities exist in the various countries?

I have been restoring a Montesa Cota 348 Malcolm Rathmell Replica over the last few months, unfortunately although the tank/seat unit looked very good the dreaded Ethanol has attacked the inside even though it had been treated with a sealer ( make unknown). Great lumps of the stuff could be heard rattling around inside when the tank was shaken, after fishing as much out as possible ( depressing work) I realised that the only really effective repair would be either an alloy tank beneath a shelter or a complete alloy tank and seat unit both of which were turning out to be expensive options. I set the unit to one side and pondered my next course of action. Fate played a…

As soon as the new 4RT comes out, I’m in. Just wondering (UK) where the best place is to sell a (very nice, hardly any use, mint, 2016 4RT since you’re asking..) bike these days. Not angling for any PM’s to buy it by the way. Back in the day I used to use TMX but suspect it reaches less folk nowadays. Also sold a couple of older bikes on Car & Classic with no probs. I distrust that well known online auction site. Maybe the classifieds on this site? Don’t really want to trade in but equally don’t want potential bike thieves coming round. Thoughts?

I am 5'11 tall (180cm) and 190 lbs (86 kg). I am athletic and very physically fit. I race in GNCC hare scrambles and ride hard enduro on my GasGas 300 XC. I want to get a trials bike to help with my hard enduro skills and also as just another motorcycle activity to enjoy. I have never even seen a trials bike in person and I don't think there are any clubs near me but I will try to look. I have no idea what to look for for a first trials bike. 2 stroke or 4 stroke, engine displacement, etc. I do not want to get a beginner bike that I will quickly out grow but I do not want a bike that will be too much for me. There is a beta dealer 2 hours from me and I think that …

Hi everyone, Newbie here! I recently tried out trials for the first time and really enjoyed it. Thinking about buying a trials bike of my own but curious how they are in terms of maintenance and repairs compared to a street motorcycle? I imagine that with all the heavy impacts and shocks on the bike it can cause quite some damages, so would be great to hear what your experiences have been... Cheers!

I recently happened upon a new piece of ground that would be perfect for trials events and/or practice sessions. I came across it by chance and was rather excited when I got talking to the land owner and he turned out to be a keen motorcycle enthusiast. I asked him if he would be interested in hiring the land out for either events or as a practice ground. He was quite blunt and told me he was not interested because of liability. He had heard a story of a farmer who had allowed MX bikes to practice on his land and even though he had all the riders sign a waiver of liability a person who crashed there was advised by solicitors to sue the land owner. The rider won the case a…

On a recent holiday to Scarborough I spotted an advertisement for a Sea Angling competition entry fee £5 prizes of from £200 down to £40 & £50 for largest fish. Trials & most other motorcycle sports pay a minimum of £15 entry and much more for speed events yet give out very few awards. I know we have insurance costs to take into account, some years ago I attended a local car rally regional status & drivers could sign on when using certain products tyres, oil etc and be in line for a bonus for a good result I'm talking modified road cars not WRC. You would think at National level trials the suppliers could give a little back to unsupported riders.

The missus is struggling with clutch and brake control (Evo 250). She finds it difficult to grip the bars and operate the levers at the same time so is slipping into bad habits of using two fingers on the levers or not covering the levers while riding. The bike has AJP levers on it at the minute and I wondered if anyone else with this issue has a better recommendation? My bike has Apico and they really don't look any different if I'm honest, just a bit longer. I'm also tempted by some of the clutch modifications in the Beta forum to make it easier to pull the lever in. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks.

This early 2T version had escaped me but recently came across it surfing around eBay. Wondered whether anyone had first hand experience of one tackling a section, or even hearsay from someone else that had tried...? Given I'm not a serious trials rider, and fitted with the right sort of tyres, wondered if it could tackle both green-laning and a bit of self-learning at my local trials centre...?

I bought a Beta Evo and the points on the pegs are more blunt than any I've ever seen on an off road motorcycle. I feel like they'e been a factor in my foot coming off at least once already. Seems like they could be fixed with some dremel work. Has anyone ever done this? I'm using MX boots right now which are a little smooth in comparison to what I think I see on trials boots, which doesnt help. I should probably just buy new pegs as I think the teeth are aluminum and would get bent even more easily. Also If anyone can recommend inexpensive ones I'd appreciate it.

We in the US have very little to celebrate these days, but Pat Smage always brings a smile to my face. Making Fat Bikes cool. See BMX bicycle training for 2018 Trials Season for further evidence of the beneficial results from getting off your moto trials bike once in awhile!
