  1. Hi, thanks for the reply, I believe tht you can use a modified seal retainer to do this but this one has the bearings located inside the original casting, Dont know if this is possible on original M80 case.

  2. I suspect that someone has upgraded the bearing to the later spec. This can be done to all engines as far as I know.

The easiest way I know of getting the gearbox bearings out is to use a pair of mole grips on the outside race and then gently heat the area

and just pull and turn at the same time. should just pop out. just done one myself. Hope this helps

  3. Hi, I have just split the cranks on my M80 engine and have found it has 3 main bearings. I was sure that it was only later models that had this feature. I also want to remove the two gearbox bearings that are located in blind holes, what is the best/easiest method?

    Cheers,

  4. ??? => The numbers are printed on the bearings / seals take these numbers

If they got lost, ... this is the specification of the ball bearings for the rear hub: 2x 17x40x12mm

The front hub bearings are: 2x 12x32x10mm, take SKF INA, or whatever you get as an industrial standard.

To the seals, (Simmerringe in German, because they where invited by Mr. Simmer in Germany): 2x 17x32x10mm.

These bearings and oil seals you get nearly everywhere where they sell bearings and oil seals, nothing special.

If thats the case just go to your nearest Force 7 bearing factor, cheap and very helpful for any bearings, I got new mains for mine for about

  5. If the bearings are OK You can still use the old conrod,

    BUT:

If you turn the conrod by hand and the bearings feel kind of harsh while moving (difficult to explain),

not smooth and without any feelable resistance, than it's time to exchange.

Damages to the bearings can emerge just because the engine had stood too long without being driven.

Thanks for the reply, the bearings feel fine I ws just thinking of doing the job while I had the cranks split, may save a job later on, I was going to have a new big end bearing fitted to original con rod if possible,

  6. Hi, I am slowly progressing with my M80 rebuild and I am splitting cranks to replace gearbox shortly. I am considering having the crank rebuilt with new bearings but most kits include a new conrod. This adds a lot to the cost when budget is limited! Is it feasable to rebuild using the original con rod with new bearings or is there a good reason for replacing everything? Also, can any one recommend a good engine guy in Newcastle/Durham area to carry out the rebuild?

    Cheers,

  7. Hi, just finished pulling apart the clutch and fly wheel (exellent clutch holding tool came from Bult UK yesterday!)) on M80 motor. Does anyone know the correct sizes for the woodruff keys as the ones that came our were decidedly of the home made variety.

    Cheers

  8. Cheers Martin, I was wondering if the factory made some after market frames or some other manufacturer could have made them at a later date. I think I have an M-85 frame from same year so I will compare these,

    cheers
