  1. 4 speed Bultaco's are great to mix and match parts. I built a 1966 Sherpa Scrambler with a Matador top end and a Mercurio close ratio gear box lower end.

I also ran a 1966 Matador 4 speed set up as a trials bike for about 7 years, only recently selling both the Sherpa s and trials bike to the same young guy.

my Enfield heavyweight trials isn't the problem, it my G80cs scrambler for Sundays races that is screwed up. The big bike needs a new carb and the head steady is stripped out and its blowing bubbles at the base gasket.

  3. Yep, thats Jody's AJS 350cc. I didn't drive down because my own g80cs has a few Gremlins that need to be sorted. I should have just brought out my Enfield but that's a long way to go and only run one event. 6 hours one way from Redmond WA. Man I am catching **** from the VME member for not going!

  4. Hey Swooshdave,

I like it! If you get a chance check out Jody Heintzmans 350 AJS for inspiration. Also the VME Vashon Island guys are big on the Matchless/ AJS stuff. I have a G80cs that's giving me fits. Its hard to resist the big bikes from o'l Blighty.

  5. I would start with a rod kit-crank shaft rebuild and work out from there. double check the ignition side where the crank bearing fits for wear. The last 4 Bultaco's I had rebuilt had bad ignition side bearing surfaces. I don't think Bultaco compensated for heat expansion and the left side bearing moved on the crank causing wear.

  6. This week! I have been mostly recording the engine sound of my Bultaco!

I did this because I have the intention of doing a complete engine rebuild and to have an idea of the improvements I made.

So, if anyone hears something and thinks: wait a minute! I know what that rattle is, please let me know

    Loose flywheel?

  7. Have you actually tried this ? Might be ok in the dry, could be difficult even getting out the car park in the wet.

Yes I did about 10 years ago on a 4 speed Bultaco. They worked well up to a point.

  8. All the talk about period correct Pre 65 trias motorcycles and I havent seen any mention of modern tires. My guess is if a specification tire such as a Chang Shin C186 was mandated then the sport would be much closer to the magic pre 65 than by limiting any other modification? Maybe this has been discussed already?

  9. Just one question why did you build the front brake with the torque arm working under compression ? I have always understood that this is a no no and torque arms should always be working in extension. Just wondering

Stock Enfield front end. Brake backing plate slots into boss on fork leg.

  10. the enfield looks just right and ready to ride ,it looks to me to have the std front brake anchor ,a boss on the fork leg and a slot on the brake plate, and the bracket at the backs of the leg is a brace/mudguard stay,if its a 500 it would make a really nice outfit ,, think of the fun you could have upsetting the solo riders ,,,,, will

350cc. stock Enfield stuff as much as possible.

  11. You guys are funny. Obviously wheels can be built cheaper. I only wanted to point out an Indian built Enfield could be a less expensive alternative. My wheel build included new stainless rims, spokes, powder coated hubs, bearings, brakes, newly machined brake hub (for changeable sprockets) rear sprocket, new tires, tubes, rim locks and also included a modified swinging arm for more clearance. I had hired out all the work because I got more money then time at this point in my life. I paid $700 for a running Enfield with less then 500 miles on it and bought many other parts straight from India.

    Dave

  12. In the USA  the Indian built 4 speed Enfield Bullet is considered a replica and eligible for AHRMA Premier class (Pre-65). Parts are incredibly inexpensive for the 350cc bullet. As an example I bought an aluminum cylinder, piston assembly and gaskets for under $150 straight from India.

  13. I have an older Bultaco...an M21 with a registration date of 1966, and as noted above...a four speed. So far, I haven't had any luck sourcing an electronic ignition for the bike. Bultaco UK responded quickly that they had nothing available. ElectrixWorld just refuses to answer my inquiries via e-mail. On the bike now is a Femsa unit with a lighting coil. Do any of you guys have any ideas???

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

Hey Mike, Femsa ignition is bullet proof. That little M21 did over 6000 miles on the same plug and points. Where is my article? Get cracking!

  14. Hi all, i'm new to the Bultaco forum.

    I have a 1973 91 model 250 Sherpa.

The bike starts fine, ticks over fine and runs very well at slow speeds.

when I get to approx 1/4 throtle opening I get what I can only discribe as a clacking noise.

It will rev through this with more throtle but once you back of the noise returns.

When riding between sections I find myself short shifting so that i don't ride in this rev range.

    Any idea's?

    Loose flywheel?

  15. hi guys i have a bultaco 221 175 , the swinging arm spindel was ceased to the bushes and had to be cut out.The bushes were the rubber type, i have removed the rubber but there seems to be a thin metal bush which the rubber was atached to still inside the swining arm.Can anyone tell me if i have to remove these to fit new bushes and also what bushes to replace old ones

If they were rubber you should have left them alone. Now you have to machine some bushings and stuff to put it back together again. The rubber never goes bad. Sorry.
  16. Hi,

I'm trying to fit a new return spring and I'm lost as to how I can tension it correctly.

There must be a relatively easy way to do this. Can someone please tell me what it is??

Sorry, the cases have to be split to install the spring correctly. I have replaced them without splitting the cases but it was in desperation and I had to force the spring into submission with a big pair of pliers. Dave
