Hello again to all fellow riders. i unfortunately had to sell my Bultaco Sherpa due to money worries but have now sorted out a few problems and picked my self up what i think is a 1978 Montesa cota349.
it has been stood for a good few years but turns over with plenty of compression.
looking forward to stripping it and getting it something like ready for some fun.
it does need a good few parts so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are there any 314r owners out there that could answer me a question i have on my bike.
The front disc is held on with six bolts that run through 6 cup washers which sit in the disc holes, should the disc move/float on these spacers. or is my disc worn.
hey there i'd check to see how it starts from cold, engine noise that sounds like it could be the bigend that sort of thing, also coolant leaks, the montys are rekoned to be pretty bulletproof and have great engines it all depends on how its been looked after. You can also check the general state of the bike things like wheel bearings, swingarm & linkage play, brakes, the headstock and throttle cable.hope this helps happy biking
Cheers for the advice. The bike looked pretty tidy first time round. Only thing i could find was a knock on the rear suspension linkageas i lifted the bike off the ground and back. Any advice on where to purchase ceals and bearings from. ps Right side panel split but has been fiberglassed so would like to pick up new if poss.
Just purchased my first Cota 314r and wondered if any body new if a light kit could be fitted as the bultaco i was riding was used on the rd at dusk to get me back to car and trailer. If so any advice would be welcome, ie wiring loom, where to connect and light kit.
Off to pick up my first Cota 314r tommorow. purchased off ebay cheap. Can any body give me advice on any problem areas to look for, and any advice on day to day life of running one of these would be great.
I have just upgraded from a sherpa 325 so fancied something a bit more modern.
To retard the ign do i turn the stator plate anti clockwise a slight amount.
All so i have a multi meter with a buzzer on and the top dead centre guage supplied by bultaco uk, how do i rig the multimeter up or a bulb to see when the points are oppening to gauge the amount before top dead. can it be done whitout removing the fly wheel or not.
Had the bultaco out at the weekend and managed to stall it on some rocks.
When i started her back up and put her in first, she went backwards and had me bent over the bloody handlebars. Tried all gears and every one was in reverse.
Has any body ever heard of this.
Got her back home on a trailer and started her up last night and all is well again.
Just to let you know i have re built the bike and it started first kick. I cant tell you what it was because i have done that many diffrent things to it in the last two weeks it could have been any of them. But its now a runner, and starts runs and ticks over better than before.
A very big thanks to all who responded with helpfull tips.
Its this kind of help that makes Trials Central the place to be.
I have had the flywheel off and the keyway and key are fine, I have put in a new condensor just because i had the flywheel off but the old one has only been in 3 months.I have re set timing and points gap to top dead centre.I have checked inlet rubber this looks good (no holes or splits). I have removed the bowl and its full of fuel so thats getting in as the plugs wet. Its been mentioned that the crank seals could be worn and letting in air.
Would this cause a non runner or just bad running.
Can anyone help or advise with my non running sherpa 350 199*****
It used to start up 4/5 kick and run ok. I was out on it at the weekend and it started to run rougth.
I thought it was running out of petrol so went for res but made no diffrence. It then would not tick over and stalled three times on the way home finally giving up all together, and had to be recovered.
I thought it felt like fuel starvation so stripped the carb, cleaned it and blew out with air compressor and re built. Still wont fire, tried bumping down hill and still wont go. New plug with a nice bright white spark but no joy. Have re stripped carb fitted with new slide as there was a very small piece missing from bottom, new needle main jet and mixture screw. The plug looks wet when removed. had exhaust off and looked in port. Rings and bore look good almost new looking, has good compression.
Any ideas as i am at the end of my tether and bloody fed up with kicking the cow over.
I have a sherpa 350 1978 which has the speedo drive missing. It has in its place the speedo spacer from Bultaco uk. I have now got hold of a working speedo drive and wondered if any body can tell me how it fits. Does the drive go up against the swing arm then a spacer between the drive and wheel or does it have a spacer both sides. If any body has a photo that would be great and does anybody have the spacer sizes (with in mm)
Can anyone measure the voltage that comes out of the lighting coil on a sherpa 350 199 model.
I am trying to fit lights and horn for mot and only get 2.4v on the red wire for horn,(6v horn fitted and does not make a noise when wired direct to earth or through switch). tested on a 6v battery and works fine. It is a new ign coil from bultaco uk. The yellow wire gives out 3.2v and is giving me a good brake light when pressed and not bad front and back light. but if i press the brake pedal with the lights on all goes very dim almost like a bad earth problem. all earths cleaned. i have disconected wires from magneto and replaced with a six volt torch battery to test and all works well.
Can you tell me how the resistor wires in to the back light. i have three wires, one is earthed to the frame and the outher two feed running light and brake light. am i right in thinking that it joins to the live feed going to the running light. also can you tell me what color wire i use for the lights from the mag as i seem to have 2 live feeds for lighting.
I am new to the site and wondered if anybody has fitted lights to a bultaco.
I have just purchased a 350 sherpa 78/79 frame no 199 and wondered if anybody could advise me on lights
I have purchased the brake switch and front/rear lights and have got a wiring diag from bultaco uk.
iam told they are notourious for problems with lights and blowing bulbs. looking on the wiring diag i need a resistor, where do i get one and what voltage bulbs do i need 6v or 12v
