  1. I didn't actually intend to use the bike for an enduro but after the effort that I had put in getting everything ready & prepared that week to have issues on my enduro bike on the day of the event I wasn't going to give up that easily! What fuel/oil ration would you recommend? I usually run 80:1 on trial events.
  2. Something I did not think about, will do that when I next get around to looking at the bike & cleaning out the head & once my new gaskets have come through also.
  3. Yes, another part I forgot to mention - removed carb - cleaned all up with carb cleaner, made sure jets were clear - still wouldn't start - then I went straight to removing head. The carb wasn't in such a bad state, at least not considering what the head looks like! A bit of mud around the inside of the main air in/out sections but hardly any crap down the bottom or anywhere else.
  4. Spark is ok, new gearbox oil, airbox & filter are clear & dry, fuel is good. I think the best first step will be wire wool & clearing out the head & then putting all the bits back together to see if this fixes the issue (hopefully!)
  5. After an extremely wet and muddy enduro on the weekend that I ended up doing on my 315R as my enduro bike decided to pack up also my montesa decided to die on me! Basically the air box had a fair amount of mud and water inside of it, inside the head it is also very wet and a bit muddy also. Is there any chance that I would be able to get this running again? It was running ok at the end of the enduro and it is after it has sat for 2 days while I was working that now after clearing out the airbox and changing the engine oil (which didn't look too bad) that the bike will not start (no signs of life on kick). If there is a chance that I could get the bike running again does anyone have any advice on what I should be using to clean the engine off and what, if any, sprays or substances I should be leaving inside the engine casing? Or overall any general advice as to what steps I should be taking from here?
  6. (If the +8 is too much I will likely go back to a 10T front & test between)
  7. Thanks, would you happen to know of a way to calculate what size chain I would require on a -1 +8 fitting?
  8. Thanks for this link, do you happen to know if the 48T sprocket would be ok with the current / stock chain size of the Montesa (-1 +8). Sounds like I may be needing a longer chain?
  9. Thanks for the links guys, will check them out come morning. When I say that I like to have fun on the bike & don't intend on going competition style I mean anything from small jumps / logs / hill climbs etc. I've had a few trials training sessions (Group & one-on-ones) just to get the grips of trials & simply enjoy riding the bike & overall I'd like to try out anything. At the moment I quite like the idea of circle wheelies & stunting on the trials bike which is probably how this idea of such extreme gearing came along but at the same time would like the bike rideable. Unlike a sport bike I have absolutely no requirement for speed on this bike, I have enough fun below 20mph so losing top end wouldn't bother me at all as it wouldn't if I had to be in 3rd to jump a log!
  10. I have a Montesa 315R that I was told is an 00/01 (2-Stroke model) & today I dropped the 10T front sprocket down to 9T & am liking the results although not quite a big enough drop I don't think & am looking at purchasing a much larger rear sprocket. At the moment I am running the stock 40T rear sprocket but would like to go up to something as high as 45T although not too too sure if the chain will be long enough to support this. At the moment I have the rear wheel as far back as possible to support the 9T sprocket so am thinking will definately need to go up on the rear but the most I can see anywhere is 42T. I have no ambitions of competition level trialing & just ride the bike for fun so think that going up to a 45T will make the bike very very lively in 1st & a lot more controllable in 1st gear wheelies also with the 9T on the front also. Any recommendations / links to shops that sell larger rear sprockets? I have found the following that are said to fit an 05-11 4RT but also unsure as to how sprocket sizings work between models! 44T - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160933966419 46T - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170861683618 48T - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150742663352
  11. Thanks a lot for all of the replies, been a great help. Also forgot to mention that this is my first trials bike, came from sports / cruiser / trail bikes & fancied a change! RE: ATF Oil, do ATF sell different models of their oil or would their standard transmission oil (here) do the trick? I'll be giving the bike an oil change as soon as I have bought some & also cleaning the air filter & carb. I will also be switching from 50:1 to 80:1 to check for any differences in performance Thanks Again!
  12. Hey Guys, Got myself a 315R last weekend & am now looking at servicing the bike as it hasn't been touched since new (No mods) & has been sat for 2 years also. First up, I have already seen the clutch drag issues & struggle to get it into neutral with the engine running / hot so I was looking at the heavy duty clutch plates (Link). These plates are friction plates only, should I be replacing the steel plates at the same time also (Even if showing no signs of wear) due to the size of the new plates? Also, the oil that I have seen recommended (HTX740) is hard to come by in the UK, does anyone have an alternative to suggest? One last thing! Any other highly recommended mods / upgrades to improve performance / life of bike? Thanks a lot!
