I have 3 Villiers engines, an 8E with Albion gearbox, a 6E with 3speed box and a 9E with wide ratio 4 speed all fitted with standard 9E clutches that work fine. Why fix something that isn,t broke?.
-
Simple answer to your gearing problems trialsrider46, fit a Villiers engine, lol.
-
As Blocky says, use the back brake.
-
Sorry to be a prat, but Im sure the engine you,ve got isn,t what you think. The bottom end is 9,10 or 11e, but the cylinder 8e, totally different. Good luck.

Gearbox sprockets wear more because of the much smaller radius, i,e, less teeth. If the the chain fits the rear sprocket o k, assuming the teeth on the sprocket are o k, just renew the sprocket on the gearbox. Don,t tell the dealer what I said, he wants to sell you the lot!

Am I the only person in this Island of(once was) ours that understands that the whole country has been taken over by parasitic lawyers and solicitors, aided and abetted by scumbag politicians(the lowest form of life). Yet another reason why this once great nation of ours is down the pan.

I think you will find it was Ocelots from Guisbrough, Messrs Smith and Buckworth. Trev Buckworth still rides the occasional trial.
-
Villiers service, 9E conversion works almost as good as a modern clutch. I know, i,ve got 1.
-
Extra mounting on the tail pipe/silencer is one that i remember.
-
James 197, definitely !!!!!!!!
-
Possibly the bearing has been turning in the housing, but why it leaves a copper colour i don,t know, seen it many times. Try bearing grade Locktite.
-
Do as Yamaha say and all will be well.
-
Simple, clean the brake drums and liners, oil the cables on a regular basis, and use quality clutch plates, sorted. Or is that too much work?
-
It,s knackered, I,ll give you tenner for it!
-
Hi dirtydalesman, sorry i cant help you with the gearbox sprocket as i use Villiers engines.
-
Hi, dirty dalesman, I had one of those , back in the day, got 2 now, the cush drive spider you,re looking for was like hens teeth then, thats why i use Yamaha wheels now. Good luck with your search, Regards, Trev.

Whatever happened to the new " World class " Greeves?

To anyone that that rides for fun, i occasionally ride clubman B in modern trials on my 1955 James Commando because i enjoy riding the old relic. It has the original forks, shocks, wheels, frame, Villiers 8E engine & Albion gearbox, etc. Problem is, it,s got a Domino twist grip & Yamaha exhaust, am I cheating?
-
Hi barfy, almost certainly magneto side crank bearing.
-
Hi John,
I run my 8e,s on racing castor @ 80 or 100 to one, besides the lovely smell, my engines last as long as anyone elses. In the Yamaha ty250 manual, Yam recommend Castrol R40 at 80 to 1 and the modern castors are far superior, so give it a try. Trev.

Lets see Bou ride the Scott, then we will see what he,s made of!
-
To Jonv8, tel me, whats wrong with Villiers?
-
Just thought i,d put my 2peno,th in, im an observer from choice because i love club trials, and the overwhelming majority of riders are respectfull of what we do. 1 bad apple dont .......................

Hi John, re Villiers gearing, assuming youve got the standard ratio gearbox, your options are limited. On my James commando with std ratio Albion gearbox i use 13 tooth gearbox sprocket, and 73 tooth rear. This gives a usable 1st and 2nd gear but very low top speed. On my Ruffmutt( Dalesman frame, 8e engine} i use the wide ratio Albion gearbox with 13 on the front and 63 rear which seems to be the optimum setting, but, the wide ratio gearboxes are like hens teeth. Regarding the clutch, do yourself a favour and invest in a 9e coversion, available from Nametab or Villiers services, not cheap but totally transform the riding experience. Ultimately, enjoy the bike for what it is. If you need any help or advise with Villiers engines, get in touch. Trev.
