  1. Thanks for all the help and advice so far. The bike is heading back to the dealer, so I guess I will just go from there.
  2. Ha ha, I can live with a missing torch. I wont stop riding, I am sure there will be a few more hiccups along the way! Could be worse, could of got home and locked your keys in the van as well...
  3. Thanks, I thought 05 onwards changed to black forks. At the very least it's an 06 with 04 or earlier forks on it then. Found the original add that was online and it's advertised as an 05. My receipt is an 06.
  4. Oh ok. Something I didn't know.. Thanks for the advice. I think it's only fair to speak to the dealer first and go from there. If needs be in guess that will be the way to start things. If not a a big hole or a match may have the desired effect!
  5. That makes perfect sense for a spanish bike...The more I look at it the more I think I have bought a right mongrel
  6. I think you're right about the stanchions now I have done a bit of digging. Couple of people are split on it being an 06 or not.
  7. I'll see what is said tomorrow and go from there, hopefully it will be resolved positively although I have my doubts! I'll hold off naming until then
  8. No offence taken, I'm glad of the help. its running with 75ml Rock oil to 5 litres of super. We pulled the plug and it looked like it had been running ok mix wise, no damage to the plug, pulled the header and had a quick look and nothing looked terrible. My first trials bike but had road bikes and a couple of old 2 stroke aprilias a few years ago. It was sounding like a bearing or something whining originally, thought it may be the fan bearings at first but whined in time with revs and then went solid. My only other thought is its dumped it's coolant in the oil if the casing corroded out and caused some damage that way. If it's a simple as the 10th digit of the frame number gives the year it's looking like it may be an 04.
  9. Maybe. Is there an easy way online to check the frame numbers or do I have to call beta?
  10. Hopefully he will help out, as you say it's a small world. Obviously I have concerns if it goes back for an engine rebuild after today's issues. People have been great today with regards to getting it rebuilt so I'm sure it can be done, I'm happy enough with the spanners so should be able to do it with some help along the way. Hopefully tomorrow will bring good news, if not I guess engine out and see what can be done. Live and learn as they say!
  11. Cheers. I dug the recipes for both bikes out and they state no warranty given or implied on second hand bikes or parts. May have answered my own question there I guess. If the dealer doesn't help I guess I'm stuck with it along with an engine rebuild that doesn't really seem worth it on a bike that old. Maybe I'll be lucky and it won't be hideously expensive. Even managed to lock my keys in the van whe I got home just for another laugh!
  12. Hi all, I am hoping for a bit of advice or thoughts on this one. I am new to trials and have bought a Rev 3 from a dealers, as I thought this would be a safer bet for a new rider. First bike I bought I found the frame around the tank was cracked so I returned the bike and it was exchanged for a different bike, meant to be an 06 but it may actually be an 05. Within 10 mins of riding the bike for a second time it starting making a nasty whining noise so I went to limp the bike back to the van to take a look and it stopped and locked solid, kick start won't budge. The bike was meant to of had mains and seals done by the dealer, so would of thought there should be no major. In hindsight maybe I should have walked away after the first problem but i just put it down to mistakes happen and the new bike would be fine. I must say a big thanks to the tubby trials guys and rich for the tow out and help checking the basics! Gutted and frustrating would be an understatement! I have contacted the dealer, hopefully I will hear back tomorrow. Obviously I want to speak to the dealer before pointing fingers and naming people and see what the response is as it may be all good news and they will sort the problem. Ultimately what are your thoughts on wether I have a leg to stand on, have I got much chance in getting the bike replaced or repaired or even a refund? Or is it a case of tough it's broke fix it. Thanks Dan
  13. Hi Rich, I'll be on in-laws duty boxing day so wont be able to make that one, appreciate the offer though. I think there is a trial on over at Broadway this weekend I'll try to take a look at with my mate. Dan
  14. Hi Rich, I'm hoping to get a bike and transport sorted out over Christmas, think I've settled on a beta rev3 as there seems a few around my budget. Just on the hunt for some boots and trousers to go with it and I'll be good to make a fool of myself! Defiantly looking for easy, but would love to get good enough to at least take part in a trial sometime in the future. It would be brilliant to meet up to do some practicing and get the art of falling off sorted! Another chap from my work is having a go as well so there could be two of us doing the falling off. I guess it's best to let you know when I'm sorted and see when you're next out? I'm really impressed with how helpful everyone I have contacted and asked questions over the last week or so, and how accessible it seems to be even to a total beginner. Thanks again Dan
  15. Hi Rich, Thanks for the advice, I'll stick to 250cc as a maximum size then. Hoping to find something pretty soon but I have booked a training school day early next year so may hang on until I have given that a go before buying a bike unless temptation gets the better of me in the meantime. The places in the link look good and are quite local to me, do you know of any upcoming trials I could go to and take a look at? I'm keeping an eye out for some cheap or second hands boots and I guess some mx trousers would do the job. Is there a contact I can contact at Stourbridge about joining/finding out where I can meet a few people? Thanks again Dan
  16. That sounds like a royal pain. Is there any specific years to avoid or ways to spot any potential problems when viewing? It is sounding more like a montesa would be the way to go. I have found some bikes around 1998/2000 on fleabay close enough to budget, I seem to keep finding these three and the odd mid nineties Beta Techno. Montesa 315R 1999 - £1295 Beta Rev 3 250 2002 - £1295 Gas Gas Contact 250 1996 - £1150 seems a lot for the year? Would there be anything to worry too much about with one of these three, assuming they aren't basket cases!
  17. Thanks for the reply, gives me some good starters. I'll drop a few clubs an email, I'm located in Bromsgrove so Redditch seems a good club to start with, I'll see if there's a local trial I can go along to for a look. Hopefully I can find somewhere nice and easy just to get use to a trials bike after riding sports bikes and find some experienced riders willing to offer some pointers to get started. Long term I would like to some novice/beginner trials. Budget wise it's a bit tight to be honest. I'd be hoping for a bike up to a maximum of around 1200. A montesa or beta were the two I have been looking more closely at, the montesa would be the bike I would choose if I can find one in budget as it seems to have good reviews for beginners, happy to do any general maintanence myself. The chap I'm hoping to start riding with is a ex mx rider and good with the spanners and has offered some help if there are any headaches along the way.I think he's also joined and posted in this section as well. As for riding gear I'm hoping just to pick up the essentials, second hand if needs be and add as I go along. I may well take a trip down to Stroud to have a look what's on offer and get a feel for what I need. I'd like to get a bike and some essential gear to start around the 1500-1600 marker if possible, as I don't think having an expensive bike and gear will make any difference to me at this stage. If needs be I can go a bit higher? Thanks again for the advice
  18. Hi all, I am complete trials novice but fancy giving something other than road riding a go. I am planning on heading to a school for a training day in the near future and if all goes well I will be buying a bike soon after. As a beginner I want to try and stick to relatively cheap first bike and gear where possible.Any advice on starting off in trials, bikes, equipment etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Dan
