If it's chain driven with a bit of engineering and ingenuity you could fit any old magneto as a stop gap, making a sprocket might be the expensive bit though.
Tha mag sprocket well we think it is was tied to the engine with a piece of string
Well he only needs the magneto ( the lower part of the mag-dyno combo )they are self generating and don’t need a battery. Either remove the lights or rig something up with bicycle led’s ? I have a twenties flat tanker without lights, I have used bicycle lights on the rare occasions that I think I’ll be riding late ( usually twilight coming home from the pub )
The problem is the correct chain driven mag is rare and the only one we have seen for sale is £300 and doesn't work, lights won't be an issue as it will only be ridden in the day.
My sons just bought a 1934 Royal Enfield, the cost of bits is killing him well the few we can find, as he is a humble apprentice. Its missing the Mag Dyno thing, only one we have seen is £300 and its not working so as its only for shows and wont be having much road use we are thinking of using a total loss battery powered system, has any one done this? We have seen a few on line but it would be good to talk to some one who has done it, we are even contemplating building one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AoSJIdhsME&t=147s He just wants the bike together and running originality can wait until he can manufacture the parts he can't find..
Could some one give me an idea what to tell the insurance company regarding value? We thought £1500-1700?
Its a bog standard 1962 C15, been stored in the dry for the last 30 odd years, we need to insure it against theft whilst we decide what to do with it as we just have too much stuff going on.
Its 99% complete but needs recommissioning as it hasn't ran for years
I did wonder that's why the initial plan was to manufacture a new rear end so it can be bolted on then once the projects over it can be returned back to a classic hopefully a trials bike.
We have managed to buy a tatty scrap frame so we can keep the original 65ish frame untouched.
And yes, it is meant to be a relaxing enjoyable sport for the fun of it - not a financial empire building enterprise for the 'special' parts (fiddle we used to call them) manufacturers - so buy an old nail, and then find the sheer pleasure in losing less marks than somebody who has just spent many thousands on a 'new' old bike
Now being new to all this I do wonder if its going the same way as many other motor sports and pricing people out of it?
My son is currently building a C15 Bobber for a school project but once its all over he would like to turn it back in to a trials machine, but already the costs are spiralling out of control before we have bought any of the trials bits.
So what class would it fall in to?
Its a 1965/66 not certain which as we are waiting for the documents.
Or should we just build it around the 1958 donor frame we have and claim its a 58?????
As an outsider looking in many of the machines I see are just built of various bits so I find it all a bit confusing?
Well fond a donor frame its a 1958 but the rear loop and swinging arm look the same and the gent has kindy agreed to post it for me, so we are a step nearer
Firstly the man I bought it from was doing me a favour selling it so cheap so I don't feel its right just to sell it on for profit, and my son likes the idea of an older bike.
I fully support what you are saying and don't want to build it for him. My only input is I wanted to make it a Bolt On Bobber conversion as I don't want to spoil what is a nice classic and he actually agrees.
Basically the brief is build or modify anything as long as you do a good write up showing how you did it, how you got help skills you learned what when wrong etc, the main task is to show learning and recording these learning's.
He has spoken to the school and they have approved the idea and I have explained to him just how hard and time consuming it will be but at the moment I am struggling to keep him out of the garage.
I purposely do the research but don't tell him I have done it so he has to do a lot himself and if he gets it wrong I can steer him in the right direction.
Luckily I have access to a well equipped workshop and can teach him many of the skills my self, he got a Multi meter and socket set for Christmas and has taken to the socket set no problem but he will soon see the benefit of the meter once we hit an electrical problem.
Its interesting to see how he wants to extend the frame at the rear by 4" as he can see in his mind what he wants having spent hours googling pictures. He wants a brass fire extinguisher for the oil tank too so its a bit out of the ordinary, he has a lot of the ideas in his head so I am pushing him to get them on paper both good and bad as its all evidence of the learning and recording process.
Well its almost stripped, engines coming out tomorrow if all goes to plan then we will make a stand for it and see what needs doing.
No compression at the moment could we have a stuck valve or am I being too optimistic?
Looking at how we are hoping to make the Bobber bolt on back end and it would be easier if we could find a donor frame to take the back loop and swinging arm off, then we can just alter them to the formation he wants, has any one got one they no longer need and what should I pay? I have seen some on Ebay but they don't appear to sell well, but as usual they are all miles away.
So what year would it be? The bloke I bought it from thinks its a 1964 and recons he has some docs for it when he finds them
I will have another look for the engine number tomorrow
To be honest we would like to get it running and turn it in to a trials bike, I have a small budget, well I am selling my Dax monkey bike to finance it so this should give me £2-300 spare to spend on it.
I paid £200 for the BSA which I felt was cheap and it was all I could find for the money.
I realise its never going to be a show winner but if we end up with the school project done and a usable trials bike then that's fine as its a Lad and Dad project I cant see us parting with it.
I have a few friends who I have helped out in the past who will help me with it, painting etc so this should help the budget
Not strictly trials but help needed
