  1. It may be worth phoning the distributors as well, I think it's Apico but you may need to check.

I agree with the others though, go in the shop and demand your money back.

Service like this should be stamped out, if you don't get a good result having given them plenty of sensible chances, name them and shame them.

    Good luck.

    PS.

I highly recommend Alpinestars, had mine for about 4 years and they are brilliant after lots of use, but I can't help feel it's the luck of the draw as I have seen others on here give them a right old slating....

  2. I bought a nice quality clear 10lt plastic can in Halfords, from their camping range I can't remember the price but it was cheaper than a 'petrol' can and loads cheaper than a metal 10lt can. They come with a handy push in spout.

BUT... you need to fit an O Ring into the cap otherwise it will leak like a bugger :)

I've had mine for a 6 months or so, use it a lot and it has been fine.

Easy peasy, cheap as fried potaters

I switched away from my trusty old metal Jerry Cans because I was told that you can end up with condensation inside the can as the temp' alters in your workshop/garage/van and therfore water in your fuel?

  3. It's not justified at all Unbalanced!

You're mates are just not manly enough to carry such a boot off, let them stick with their black, brown, or maybe, oooooooohhh, blue boots.

    Wear them with pride :D

I've got the Astars and in proud poofy white.

The most comfy boot I've EVER owned, including road race, MX, Timberland and Wellies.

I see a lot of people make reference to them falling apart, I can only speak from my own experience and say that mine have been brilliant, I have had them for two and half years and they are fine. I ride about 10 -15 hours a month so they've had plenty of use. I have worn a hole on one ankle but only because I stupidly rub them against the chain.

I love 'em, whatever the colour, but especially in Vegas suit white ;)

  4. I'm looking to get some 661 Kyle Strait knee pads but I'm a bit worried about size as someone mentioned that they're a tad on the small side. I'd imagine I'd want a large or x-large but wondered if anyone with these sizes could measure around their thigh/shin where the elastic sits and let me know what fits what. I can't find anywhere local that sells them to try them on.

Sorry if this is a bit of a thread hijack but didn't think it justified a new thread with this one going on.

    Thanks in advance.

    Allan.

Oh, forgot to mention, what's the deal with the standard, patriot and earth 'Kyle Straits', just colour or is there more to it?

    Hi Allan.

I bought some of the 661 Kyle Strait pads from someone on ebay [an MTB shop based in Westbury Wilts] and they arrived today, which was an excellent service being here nextday.

I went for the 'white' ones in XL, the ones with the red logos are the patriot and I think they have a hard shell, whereas mine are a softer armour. They feel pretty substantial though, actually they are a bit chunkier/bulkier than I thought they would be, but they fit under my normal denim jeans OK so I think they will be fine under my stretchier trials jeans tomorrow.

Size wise, I reckon they are about right for my 18" [above knee] and 16.5 [below knee] legs.

    I hope that helps.

  5. Sorry to ask such a dummies question, but nevertheless : ;)

I've just bought an Iridium plug for my 08 290 and I've checked my little tiny manual that came with the bike but can't find the gap spec'.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks! :guinness:

  7. I've had my Astars for 2 years now and use them for about 2-3 hours a week on average, and they have held up brilliantly. Wearing a bit thin on the left ankle but still plenty of meat left.

No problems with the soles or any other issues.

I give them a bit of a 'birthday' every now and again, with a wash off and a good old treating with some good leather food.

They are the most comfy 'shoe' I own as well.

But I agree with an earlier poster, it's down to personal preferences.

  8. I've had mine for a couple of years now and it suits me fine.

I ride at least once, sometimes three times a week, so it gets pretty stinky and so the lining gets regularily washed.

It's all held together really well.

I would therefore recomend them, as far as doing the job is concerned, just need to suit your own head I suppose. ;)

    Hope that helps.

  9. Bikespace, I think it was from the 06 on where they went away from the fixing being like yours where you can handily use cable ties, which worked so well, to 2 bolts on the top of the mudguard. Not quite as practical but luckily I have stopped falling as often as I did a few years ago, other wise I would have been forking out

  10. I broke the rear on my 06 week, I've had it for just over a year and luckily had a new spare.

It shattered right on the 2 rear bolt fixings.

Has anyone come up with a simple mod to do away with the bolt fixings, to make t less likely to break?

The old cable tie fixings on my previous 03 were a bit of a money saver when they used to break rather than the mudguard.

  11. Ive seen that before, I dont think that would have the same effect, 2 flaw's i can see in it are that you can only bring your clutch in so far before your hitting your rear brake, which wouldnt be good for frantic clutch grabbing. also, I like my clutch to bite just away from my fingers and I think it would have to bit alot further out if it still has to allow travel for a rear brake to be applied. Ill have my new bike on tuesday so i may experiment a little bit with my old beta, only problem is that i hear the rear on a beta can be a bugger to bleed (never tried it).

    All the best

    Tom

Funny you should mention this, I have thought about fittig a thumb brake to my bike.

I fancy the idea because I have ltd movement in my right ankle and so struggle a bit sometimes.

They are now readily avaialble for road race bikes, but quite expensive.

I have knwn a few roads racers rig something up before they came on the markey, so it is possible and worth playing about with.

If you look in a Demon Tweeks catalog or their website you will see them and it may give you a few pointers.

    Keep us posted

  12. This smell takes me straight back to racing in the 80's with North Glos at the likes of Keevil, Castle Combe, Staverton and Colerne, lining up in the holding area with TZ's and old classics, it was one of the best parts of racing in those days.

I also remember that there was a Silkolene oil that gave a similar whiff with YPVS, RD-LC's and RG250's.

Now-a-days I use Ipone in my Sherco as does may mate, every now and then the woods are full of the same R smell and it comes from my mates bike and yet we are using the same oil? Mine smells mildly of Strawberries, his more often than not smells of R. It makes me very jealous.

Reading this thread tells me 3 things:

One of the oil comanies need to be stamping all over this and making an oil that has that smell.

Someone should come up with an aftershave. 'AAAR' the smell of oily men.

I need to get some R for the lawnmower, nice tip ;)

  13. Got to agree with Lewis, everyone has different taste and all the makes have their own 'feel'. What suits one rider might not suit another. Try before you buy if you can, just like everything else in life

That is surely the best advice, in an ideal world though how long would it take you more experienced riders to dismiss [or not] a bike after a test ride?

As a relative novice, I just wouldn't have the appreciation to make a decision like that in a short ride, more like I may have some idea after several long rides.

I think that it is better to look at a few bikes and go for one that seems to be tidy and potentially reliable and hopefully it will turn out to be 'the' bike for you, but it will certainly give you a toe in the water and enable you to check out other bikes as you get the chance to do so in the future, so that the next time you face a similar decision you are better armed.

  14. Good afternoon,

A friend of mine is think of buying a trials bike, either a Sherco, Gas Gas or Beta with an engine size 200cc. Say approximately a 2001 version up to a 2005 model, price hasnt been decided yet.

Please could anyone reccomend which would be the bike to go for out of these 3, in terms of maintenance, with any advatages or disadvantages.

    Thanks in advance.

    WRC

I can only speak from my own experience, being fairly new and late to trials [ about 5 years now] I bought an 03 290 Sherco and a mate of mine an 02 290.

We ride quite often, 2 to 6 hours a week, and have had no problems with our bikes, we service them regularly which is a piece of cake and cheap enough to do.

I bought an 06 290 Sherco last Feb, and that has also been fine.

So, the Sherco is fine as far as I'm concerned.

I still have the 03, if that's of any interest to your mate, it is a nice one and I would happily sell it now.

For what it's worth, having ridden road race bikes for 20 years, and then road bikes and Supermoto, trials is brilliant, the best fun I have ever had on a bike.

  15. I have my spies! Not much gets past me when I am being talked about! And if you can't wear a monosuit and feel sexy then you either have to get down the gym a bit more or chill out! I have noticed over the years, the ones who make the biggest fuss are usually the ones with the biggest hidden problems.. think on

 Sadly for me, my 'problems' would be all to noticable if I squished myself into a lycra all in one, it's exhausting enough sucking my belly in over the top of my jeans.

Down the bloody gym it is then.

  16. Hello lads - nice to know I'm the current topic of conversation. If you have any questions or simply just want some action shots of me on my bike then email me directly and I'll respond accordingly.

    Hello Mr Lad,

I hope you don't mind our good natured smiling at your ad.

I'll not need the action shots, but thanks.

  17. What a great idea a trials game would be, I can see it now 'Dougie Lampkin World Trials Championship' I would certainly buy it. :D

If any of you have a contact for Dougie, tell him to get the ball rolling and be the first, he should speak with the people who made the TT Superbikes game, replicating the TT course perfectly.

    They are called Jester Interactive.
