I think you can buy backgounds still from your local motor factors . As for numbers , i did mine with the lettresette(??) the things you rub over with a pencil .  Only not sure how big they go ??

You do mean the loads of letters and numbers on a 'foil paper' type stuff?

I have em in white and black. Mine are reasonable sized for a motorcycle (trials) sized plate.
