Montesa Cota 349

Featured Replies

Hi All

I'm new to this forum i have recently purchased the bike and i just want to know if i have bummed out or struck gold no pics as yet camera's junk.

Great bike, and you can make double time pulling stumps with it.

If you can ride well nothing will stop you, if you can't ride well, nothing will stop IT!

It WILL go to the top of any hill but you may not be on it. Actually slightly harder to ride a 350 than a 250 but you get used to it. It will work well for you I'm sure especially if you are a bigger rider.

Err, depends. Which model? From the white wonders onwards they were decent. Prior to that they were crap. However all of them had (to quote Perce) "the turning circle of a fully laden supertanker".

Hi the montesa is a red model i'm hoping it's an 80's bike but will have to check the frame no# and clear it up. I will be on the lookout for a pair of mudgaurds prefer genuine one's but pattern one's would do. I'm just looking for availability of the mudgaurds and other spares at the moment .

Engine/frame # doesn't tell us much other than it's a 349. There may be other subtleties of which I'm not aware. If it's red it could be either the mark 1 or mark 3 (the white wonder being a mk 2).

You'll have no probs finding pattern mudguards. Originals? Dunno.

Mark I (actually there's no such thing but it's the simplest way to differentiate them):

Mark II (white wonder):

Hi the bike i have is like the one you have pictured as MK1 (top pic). What year is that bike?

Dont know if you will get the picture from above but this is my new purchase, and now just getting to grips with oil changes, needs a few things but looks all orginal.Ive also got a frame, bash plate, tank seat cover the idea is to start building another from scratch. Are there much differences between the MK1 TO MK3 in frame and engine .Can you tell me a year of manufacture of the white wonder.

Slim: it's about an '80. Not my favourite bike. I had all manner of probs with mine. Do a search on these forums for details.

Davy: Can't say what years the white wonder was, but the frames changed dramatcally from the "Mark II" to "Mark III". On the Mark II the stays between the swinging arm pivots and the head steady were bolt ons. On the mark III it was an integral part of the frame.

Hi does anyone know if the two head stay tubes are vital or is it possible to have a single tube on the engine at one time, also i have a problem with the choke lever on the amal carb it won,t stay open, it works if i hold it open but it's an a*** to kick at the same time.slim

Yes both of the tubes that go from the head to the swingarm pivot are necessary as is the stay that goes from the head to the top tube. On this bike and the 348, these components are not just to steady the head, they are to provide triangulation for the main frame loop.

The other issue just means that the indent that holds the starting device on is not strong enough. Does it still have a MK11 AMAL carby?

I wouldn't risk it. The forces transferred to the steering head by those stays are not insignificant and it's possible the steering head will crack as a result of uneven transfer of these forces. Perce should be a bit of an expert here.

the carb is an Amal item is there an up-grade and what carb do i use. Also there seems tobe a lack of any chain guide or tensioner it sounds like an old moto x er when pushed
