February 16, 200521 yr I know. The materials would be more than that if you were to make a one off. How come a mass produced item like a mud guard can be more than a two piece welded together and tested fuel tank.

February 17, 200521 yr It costs a fortune to tool up to mold plastic. Stamping metal (if the stampings are not too complicated) and welding can be much cheaper. And what's this about Sherco tanks being made out of cheese?!? Sherco riders are the only ones who always know how much fuel we have!!
February 17, 200521 yr Yep Charlie, right again! The tool for a rear fender is probably close to 80K US. It would need to run in a 600 to 800 ton press. Because of the length of the fender, the mold size would probably lean toward a 800 ton. A 600 ton would mold it fine if the tool would fit between the tie bars. The surface area of the fender is not too large, but that odd shape just means you need a larger mold and a larger press and more money. I would hope that they would be molding 3 or 4 fenders per shot (one mold with 3 or 4 parts) and utilizing thier press time. It would also be nice to see them use a FISA Valve Gate System so that there are no runners or gates to trim. (Maybe I get a trip to Spain too!)
