I am off to hopefully buy a 03 290 on saturday. As a complete novice to trials bikes, what should i be looking for? Do these bikes usually have oil dripping from the engine? should there b a bit of play in the stearing?

You know what im on about, all the basic stuff to check.

Where are you buying the Sherco from???

Only things you can do mate, is listen to engine, gearbox & clutch (making sure theres no weird noises),have a ride to feel how engine,clutch & gearbox feel,check for any oil or fluid leaks (once it's warm after you've ridden it), check sprockets & chain for wear, check wheel bearings,spokes,swinging arm & steering bearings for excessive play, check fork seals & rear shocker for leakage.
