wallo
Hi all, I did the Sam Cooper road trial yesterday and towards the end of the trial the engine was sounding terrible, but after letting it cool down for a while it got better and then the noise would return as soon as it warmed up. From cold the engine runs fantastic, no noises at all, it only makes the noise when it's hot. I think it must be related to heat and wondered if there any specific things to look out for. To be honest I had a similar issue with an alloy barrel on a BSA where the liner would move when the engine got hot. I had to get a space made so the head pressed against the line preventing it from banging into the head. The top hat stopped the liner from moving down the barrel. Oil is returning OK and the rockers are getting plenty of oil so this is why I'm putting it down to a heat issue. I've tried making the mixture richer and may go from a 5 to a 7 or 8 NGK plug. The barrel is a short stroke one from MD Products should the head press down on the liner to prevent it from moving? Tonight I plan to run the bike in the workshop and then apply the air compressor if I can replicate the noise. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks Ken
totalshell
if its getting too hot its either too lean or you ve an airleak or the timing is too far advanced..
charlie prescott
Hi Guy's. Hi Ken. You should not have any trouble with the Mick Dickinson barrel. What piston are you running? And what head is it? And there is no head gasket? Does it start first kick without any effort? What Mag? What carb size and settings. What Cam ? Some Ariel engines are quite noisy as well, one is not the same as the next, you just need to get some mileage on it. and let it cool between short running in sessions if it is a new motor. Regards Charlie.
