i have a slight rattle from the top of the barel and it gets quicker when i rev it could it be the tappets needing adjusted? can any one tell me a easy way to do this or some tips on doing it? i.e how do i know that it is at the top end of the compresion stroke? how can i most accuratly adjust them? any help please

The manual covers this (and everything else) very comprehensively.

Take off the valve covers and the oil fill cap

Rotate the crankshaft 'till the T mark on the flywheel lines up with the reference mark in the oil fill hole

Check that the engine is on its compression stroke i.e. both rockers are loose, if not, rotate crankshaft through 360º

use bent feeler gauges to set valve clearances, inlet 5 thou, exhaust 12 thou .

If you don't understand this, pay someone who does to do it, it'll be cheaper in the long run.


I've had 2 Montesa 4RTs, the first needed the exhaust rocker slackening off a little after 2 years (still in tolerance but had tightened slightly), the second one is just over a year old (60ish trials) and needs no adjustment yet.

i have a user maual but the settings are difrent to 5 and 12 they are more like 12 inlets and 20 exhaust would that be rite for a 2006? is it difrent on later models?

It seems you don't understand the difference between thousandths of an inch and hundredths of a millimetre.

Since you say you have the manual which I know explains the setting sequence in simple terms and with photographs, I repeat:
